Thomas has been a partner in our antitrust group, based in the Berlin office, since 2001. More recently, he spends significant time in our Vienna office where he heads the Austrian practice. Thomas specialises in EU law, with a particular focus on EU and German competition law, EU state aid law and questions regarding the European internal market. He also regularly represents clients, including for example the German Government and the European Central Bank, before the EU Courts in Luxembourg. His experience crosses a range of industry sectors including pharmaceuticals, chemicals, building materials industry, gas and water, media, railway, logistics and transport.
Thomas studied law at the universities of Trier, Lyon, Geneva and Berlin, and holds a Doctor of Laws (Dr iur) degree from the Freie Universität Berlin. He worked at a management consultancy firm in Johannesburg for a year before joining Freshfields in 1996. He has also worked from the firm’s Brussels office.
He is a member of the German Association of Competition Law and the German Council on Foreign Relations. He authors, publishes and lectures regularly and was appointed Honorary Professor by Europa-Universität Viadrina in 2011. Thomas works in German, English and French.
