Who's Who Legal Trade & Customs: Experts

Simon Schropp advises companies, trade associations, and governments on issues relating to international economic policy, international trade and investment disputes, regulatory issues, and competition and antitrust matters. He supports clients by applying economic concepts, principles, models, and methods to applicable legal concepts. Dr Schropp was recognised in the 2015 edition of Who’s Who Legal: Trade & Customs as one of the “most highly regarded individuals” worldwide, where he was commended as an “outstanding practitioner” with a “wealth of experience” in the industry and praised for his “highly skilful handling of complex matters.”

Dr Schropp oversees the work of Sidley’s in-house economists and manages the economic analysis group. Comprised of in-house PhD-prepared economists and econometricians, the economic analysis group enhances Sidley’s services by providing economic analysis and insight across a wide range of disciplines, industries, and fora. In this role, Dr Schropp has gathered extensive experience in a variety of business sectors, including aviation, e-commerce, science and technology, industrial and consumer goods, mining and natural resources, energy and transportation, food and agriculture, and financial services. Dr Schropp supports Sidley’s clients and lawyers in a variety of fora, including before World Trade Organization (WTO) panels and the Appellate Body, domestic courts, arbitral tribunals, and domestic regulatory agencies.

Dr Schropp is an active participant in the international trade community. He has assumed numerous speaking and teaching engagements, for example at the WTO, the US International Trade Commission, the European Commission, the Committee for Economic Development in Australia, the London School of Economics, the Graduate Institute in Geneva, George Washington University, George Mason University and the Hamburg University Institute of Law and Economics. He is a regular contributor to the academic literature, and serves as a reviewer for academic publications, such as the Review of International Organizations.

Dr Schropp holds PhDs in international economics from University St Gallen (HSG), and in international studies from the Graduate Institute, Geneva. He also has master’s degrees in business administration from HSG and in international affairs from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA).

WWL says: Simon Schropp “knows trade economics better than anyone else; he is always available and responsive and his attention to detail is tremendous.”
