Biography:

Who's Who Legal Competition: Economists

David Spector is a partner at MAPP, which he founded in 2007 and which was acquired by KPMG in 2018. With teams of competition economists in the UK, France, Spain and Belgium, KPMG Economics is one of Europe's leading economics consulting firms. David is based in the Paris office.

David Spector is also an associate professor of economics at the Paris School of Economics and a researcher at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). Prior to taking up these positions, he taught at the London School of Economics and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

David has provided expertise in many antitrust, merger and state aid cases before the European Commission, national competition authorities, and courts of appeals. He has also provided expert testimony to Court of arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce.

David Spector was also appointed a non-governmental adviser by the French Competition Authority in 2012. In this capacity, he has been tasked with contributing to the work of the International Competition Network on unilateral conduct and merger control.

David Spector’s work deals mainly with the functioning of competition in oligopolistic markets and the interplay between economic theory and competition law. He has published articles in leading academic journals such as the Quarterly Journal of Economics and the Rand Journal of Economics, on subjects ranging from exclusionary strategies to mergers, and the role of communication in collusive practices. He also authored of a book on competition in electricity markets; several book chapters, including one on the economics of state aid control; and La Gauche, la droite et le marché (published by Éditions Odile Jacob), a book on the politics of competition economics, which won the 2018 French Economic Association Prize.

David Spector graduated from the École Normale Supérieure (Paris). He holds an agrégation degree in mathematics, and an economics PhD from the London School of Economics and the School of Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (EHESS)
