Álvaro Iza is a partner in Freshfields’ antitrust, competition and trade (ACT) practice and is based in Madrid. He joined Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in June 2000 and became a partner in 2008. He has worked in our London and Brussels ACT practices.
Álvaro specialises in merger control, both before the European Commission and the Spanish competition authorities, behavioural matters and staid aid.
He advises national and multinational clients on a diverse range of antitrust matters, from cartel infringement proceedings and dawn raids to merger control approvals by the EC and CNC. His client base for antitrust matters includes: Sony, E.ON, LafargeHolcim, Novartis, Amadeus, Imagina, Mediapro and Boehringer.
He is listed in Chambers as an expert in competition/European law and energy and natural resources. He is also listed in The Legal 500 and Best Lawyers International.
Álvaro speaks Spanish, English and French. He obtained a law degree from the University Complutense (Madrid), and a master’s degree in EU and Competition Law from the University Carlos III (Madrid). He was admitted to the Madrid Bar in 1995.
