Rafique Bachour is a partner in Freshfields’ antitrust group, based in Brussels. His practice focuses on antitrust and regulatory aspects of global M&A transactions and investigations.
He has significant experience in advising clients from a range of industry sectors including chemicals and petrochemicals, electronics, building materials and mining in addition to clients in the financial sector. Rafique acts for clients from regulated industries including energy and transport, and has particular experience in advising financial investors. His practice also covers the Middle East region where he regularly acts for local and international companies on the antitrust and regulatory aspects of their national and international transactions.
Rafique’s experience includes advising Holcim on its merger with Lafarge; Xstrata on its merger with Glencore; Solvay on its takeover of Rhodia; Ferrovial on the sale of an interest in Heathrow Holdings to Qatar Holding; BAA on its disposal of Stansted Airport, Gatwick Airport and World Duty Free; ED&FMan on its sale of a controlling interest to Südzucker; and on cartel investigations in a number of industries including capacitor, optical disk drives, semiconductors, cathode ray tube glass, car glass and others.
Rafique is a solicitor qualified in England, a member of the Brussels bar and a non-governmental adviser to the International Competition Network. He was educated at the University of Damascus (LLB), the University of London (LLM in international business law), the College of Law, London, and King’s College London (PGDL in EC competition law) where he currently lectures. He is bilingual in English and Arabic, and also speaks French.
