Tim Whitfield is a partner and solicitor-advocate at Powell Gilbert (www.powellgilbert.com), a specialist intellectual property law firm. Tim is an experienced patent litigator and has a master’s degree in chemistry from the University of Oxford.

Tim has a broad practice advising on contentious IP matters, with a focus on patent litigation across a wide range of technical areas, but is particularly known for his expertise in advising clients in the chemical, pharmaceutical, biotech and medical devices fields.

In addition to representing clients in cases before the English courts and the European Patent Office, Tim also routinely advises on the coordination of international patent and SPC litigation strategy in the pharmaceutical sector and has experience of the regulatory aspects of life sciences cases. Tim’s strong scientific background allows him readily to understand the complex technical issues which often arise in the life sciences sector, notable cases include Accord v RCT (anticonvulsant), Napp v Sandoz & Dr Reddy’s (buprenorphine transdermal patches), Varian v Elekta (radiotherapy devices), Merck v Royalty Pharma (Type 2 diabetes treatments), Fresenius v Advanced Renal Technologies (dialysis fluids), Baxter v Fresenius (medical devices), Fresenius v CareFusion (medical devices) and Sandoz / ratiopharm v Napp (controlled release oxycodone formulations) and Pfizer v Schwarz (muscarinic antagonist).

Tim joined Powell Gilbert LLP as an associate when the firm was founded in 2007. He was made a partner in 2012. Tim is a member of EPLAW, the AIPPI and LSLA.
