Who's Who Legal Thought Leaders Global Elite

Steven specialises in international and fraud litigation and is retained by government global and national organisations in relation to global disputes. He is described as “an internationally renowned practitioner with a wealth of experience in high-stakes litigation” and “an undoubted leader and superb legal strategist”. He has been described as “always seeking to push the boundaries of what you can achieve to maximise a client’s position”. Steven is the UK member of the ICC Fraud Network.

Describe your career to date.

Seven years after qualification I set up the practice, which soon developed a reputation for handling complex commercial litigation; in the past 20 years, it has developed an expertise in the area of asset recovery work.

In 2007, I was appointed deputy chairman of the Fraud Advisory Panel and more recently held posts as chairman of the Commercial Fraud Lawyers Association and member of a panel advising the Home Office on public/private strategies to counter fraud. I am a founder member of ICC FraudNet whose members have recovered billions of dollars for fraud victims.

What matters are being raised by clients most frequently at the moment?

First, our success rate, which, when disclosed, is met with approval! Second, alternative funding arrangements and particularly our established relationships with leading litigation funders.

What effect is litigation funding having on the asset recovery space?

Profound. As a result, there has been a sea change and a significant increase in the number of instructions received over the past few years.

How have perceptions towards the viability of asset recovery changed over the past 10 years?

A great deal – it was originally perceived by certain clients (as well as lawyers) as too speculative and in some circles, equivalent to throwing good money after bad. Nowadays, it is increasingly regarded as a viable option to creditors where debtors have sought to conceal their assets.

How has legal competition in the asset recovery space evolved since you began practising in the area?

While there are more practices wishing to enter the space, parties to an action are normally represented by firms like ours, which have specialised in this area for many years.

What do clients look for when seeking out advice or representation on fraud litigation and asset tracing matters?

An ability to understand their requirements, followed by creativity and energetic determination to bring about a cost-effective resolution.

How does your position as the English member of FraudNet assist your day-to-day practice?

Very much – at any one time, we are working with several FraudNet members. Clients are invariably impressed by the quality of the network.

What advice would you give to someone looking to start a career in the field of asset recovery?

Be passionate about – and as a result, be fulfilled in – the work that you do.

Work with people who share that enthusiasm and their experience with you.
