Mr Hinchey retired in 2011 from King & Spalding, an international law firm, where he led their construction disputes practice for 18 years. He now focuses his practice on arbitration and dispute resolution, having served as an arbitrator in a great variety of large energy and infrastructure disputes.

He has served as chair of, and received the highest achievement “Cornerstone” award from, the world’s largest organisation of construction lawyers, the ABA Forum on Construction Law. He is a chartered arbitrator, fellow and diplomate of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators; former president of the American College of Construction Lawyers; an honorary fellow of the Canadian College of Construction Lawyers; and fellow of the College of Commercial Arbitrators. He serves on the JAMS international and global engineering and construction panels (, the CPR International Institute distinguished panels of neutrals (construction) (cross-border) (ADR), the Institute for Energy law panel and the ICC and LCIA panels. He earned law degrees from Oxford University and Harvard Law School, and serves as a guest lecturer and on the Council of Distinguished Advisers to the Straus Institute, Pepperdine University School of Law.

Mr Hinchey has published widely, including co-authoring the definitive work, International Construction Arbitration Handbook (Thomson Reuters), now in its 2017 edition. He has been frequently listed in Chambers and PartnersBest Lawyers in America (2012 Arbitration Lawyer of the Year Award, Washington, DC) (2014 Arbitration Lawyer of the Year Award, Atlanta), US Legal 500, and The International Who’s Who in America. He was also formerly listed as one of the top eight “Most Highly Regarded Individuals – Global” in The International Who’s Who of Construction Lawyers.
