José Ramón Paz is a partner at Consortium Centro América Abogados - Honduras. His main areas of practice are banking and finance, corporate matters, mergers and acquisitions, banking transactions, corporate financing and international financial transactions. He is member of the Honduran Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the International American Bar Association, the Inter-American Bar Association and the World Jurist Association.
Mr Paz founded the firm J R Paz and Associates in 1982 which in 2005 became Consortium Centro America Abogados - Honduras. He is currently the firm's managing partner. He was an alternate judge of the Supreme Court of Honduras from 1990 through 1994.
Throughout his career, he has participated in cross-border financial transactions for amounts ranging from $30 million to $1.7 billion, involving international banks and local and regional borrowers. He has also participated in cross-border mergers and acquisitions for amounts ranging from $50 million to $650 million, involving foreign purchasers and local sellers. In the last few years he participated in a $ 600 million stock swap between two major telecomm operators in the Central America/Caribbean region, in a European manufacturer coast guard vessels sale to the Honduran government for $65 million and in a $300 million foreign investment in agro-industry and power generation in Honduras, and is currently structuring an approximate $68 million multi-party telecoms deal between a multinational investor and a public Honduran entity and handling a $50 million Honduran sovereign bond negotiation for a Venezuelan financial entity.
Mr Paz attended the National Autonomous University of Honduras, where he received his juris doctor degree in 1975, with a specialisation in commercial and banking law, and obtained his LLM with orientation in financial institutions and transactions at the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1982. He has attended business administration seminars for corporate lawyers sponsored by INCAE Business School/Harvard University (1978 and 1979), orientation courses in the US legal system at Georgetown University (1980) and George Washington University (1999), a training in private and public trusts at BANAMEX and NAFIN in Mexico City (1982), a seminar on CAFTA at INCAE Business School (2005), and a management programme for lawyers at Yale University (2009).
