Zoë Butler is a partner and founder member of Powell Gilbert LLP (www.powellgilbert.com), a specialist intellectual property law firm. Zoë has an MA in natural sciences and law, Cambridge University.

Zoë has a broad practice advising clients across the range of IP rights, but is particularly known for her expertise in advising clients in the pharmaceutical, biotech and medical device fields in complex patent disputes.

In addition to representing clients before the UK courts, Zoë has appeared in European Patent Office opposition proceedings (opposition division and boards of appeal), and has represented clients in arbitration proceedings relating to biotech/pharma contract disputes. Cases include Samsung Bioepis & Biogen v AbbVie (adalimumab), Mölnlycke v BSN Medical (wound dressings), Dr Reddy’s v Eli Lilly (olanzapine), Ivax v Chugai (nicorandil formulations), Allergan v Pharmacia (latanoprost), Affymetrix v Multilyte (DNA microarrays), Oxford Gene Technology v Affymetrix (DNA microarrays) and Pharmacia v Merck (COX 2 inhibitors).

Zoë has been involved in many multi-jurisdictional disputes, working with advisers from across Europe, North America and Asia, and, in many instances, has taken a role in coordinating such litigation. In 2003, Zoë spent six months in the Netherlands seconded to the IP/ICT department of a leading Dutch law firm.

Zoë is a member of IPLA, AIPPI and EPLAW. She frequently lectures on IP law and is a tutor on the Oxford University Diploma in intellectual property law and practice. Zoë has been a contributor to the past three editions of the CIPA Guide to the Patents Act.
