Sergio Sorinas is a partner with Herbert Smith Freehills in Paris where he heads the competition team. He advises and assists companies in all areas of French and EU competition law including merger control, cartels, abuse of a dominant position, distribution and cooperation agreements, compliance, competition law disputes and state aid.
A practitioner with an excellent reputation, he advises a large number of French and international groups before the European Commission and the French Competition Authority.
Sergio also appears regularly before French and EU courts. He recently represented HSBC in a successful appeal before the Paris Court of Appeal that resulted in the annulment of a decision of the French Competition Authority fining a group of banks for collusion in relation to interbank fees on cheques.
His experience covers a wide array of sectors, including energy and infrastructure, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, media, telecoms, financial services, transport, consumer goods and retail.
He is a member of the French Association of Competition Lawyers and the French Association for Competition Studies.
Sergio was educated at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques in Strasbourg and the University of Strasbourg; he has a master’s degree in law and an LLM in European law. He is admitted to the Paris and Barcelona bars, and speaks fluent French, English and Spanish.
