Who's Who Legal Competition: Lawyers

François Renard has managed Allen & Overy LLP’s Greater China antitrust practice since November 2008, when he relocated to Beijing. Prior to this, he was based in Brussels and Paris. He is currently based in Hong Kong.

François has more than 20 years of experience advising on antitrust and trade law. He advises Western and Asian clients on PRC, Hong Kong, APAC, EU and other national competition laws, including merger control, anti-competitive agreements and concerted practices, interaction between intellectual property and antitrust laws, abuse of dominance, market investigations, and antitrust compliance. He assists clients on multi-jurisdictional antitrust matters throughout Asia and Europe.

François has worked on various complex and award-winning merger matters in China, such as MOFCOM’s conditional clearance of the acquisition of Alcon by Novartis, the first PRC conditional clearance under the PRC 2010 remedy rules; Seagate/Samsung (Global Competition Review (GCR)’s Global Merger Control Matter of the Year in 2012); and the acquisition of AZ Electronics by Merck KGaA, which was named GCR AMEA’s Merger Control Matter of the Year in 2015. He was also the leading lawyer acting as supervisory trustee in Alpha V/Savio and Marubeni/Gavilon, and the chief representative of various leading companies on their responses to the antitrust investigations launched by NDRC in the retail, financial, pharmaceutical, medical devices and hotel sectors.

François was co-chair of the antitrust group at the EU Chamber of Commerce in Beijing between 2009 and 2011 and is one of the few EU experts who has been invited to speak to and train officials from each of the three Chinese antitrust authorities.

In Hong Kong, François assists companies in responding to HK Competition Commission investigations and in preparing for and complying with the HK Competition Ordinance. His clients are active in the pharmaceutical, retail, financial, vehicle, high tech and manufacturing sectors.

François is qualified as a EU lawyer and Hong Kong solicitor. He is a lecturer at the Institute of European Studies in Brussels and was invited as a visiting professor to one of the major Beijing universities (CUPSL) in 2014. He regularly speaks and writes on the subject of antitrust. François is listed as a leading lawyer in PLC’s antitrust cross-border category in China, Who’s Who Legal: CompetitionGCRChambers APAC and IFLR 1000, respectively. He was also the winner of the ILO Client Choice Award 2015 for the Competition and Antitrust category in China. Chambers APAC (2017) states: “François Renard is skilled at advising on multi-jurisdictional merger filings and remedy negotiations, particularly in the semiconductor and technology industries”, and quotes a source describing him as “very thoughtful and very good at diagnosing issues. He works well with our business.”

Allen & Overy's antitrust and competition practice comprises over 120 specialists located across Asia, Australia, Europe and North America. The practice advises corporate clients and financial institutions on their global antitrust policies, litigation and regulatory strategies and has acted on some of the highest-profile and most complex cases in recent years.

WWL says: François Renard is a well-established name who is frequently seen by sources on complex merger filings. Peers say: "Because he has worked in the region for a long time, he understands Asian clients very well."
