Veijo Heiskanen is a partner at Lalive. He specialises in international arbitration, including investment arbitration, and in public international law. He has acted as counsel and arbitrator in a very large number of international arbitration proceedings under the rules of the ICC, ICSID, WIPO, UNCITRAL, NAFTA, Swiss Chambers, the Cairo Regional Center for International Commercial Arbitration (CRCICA) and various national chambers of commerce in relation to energy, infrastructure, mining, gas pricing, construction, banking and finance, M&A, intellectual property and many other business sectors and industries. Furthermore, he has extensive experience as adviser and arbitrator in international claims proceedings, including in the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal, the United Nations Compensation Commission and the Claims Resolution Tribunal for Dormant Accounts in Switzerland. He acted as an expert to the arbitration commission for the former Yugoslavia (1993).
Dr Heiskanen is adjunct professor of International Arbitration at the University of Lausanne and taught at The Hague Academy of International Law in 2002. He is a member of the ICSID and AAA (ICDR) panels of arbitrators and of numerous professional associations, including the IBA, the ILA, the American Society of International Law, the LCIA, the IAI, the ASA and the Finnish Arbitration Association. He graduated from the University of Helsinki (LLB, 1983; LLLic, 1985) and holds an LLM and a Doctorate of Juridical Science (SJD) from Harvard Law School (1988 and 1992).
Dr Heiskanen speaks English, French and Finnish and has a working knowledge of German and Swedish.
