John P Bang is a partner (foreign legal adviser) and co-founder of the international arbitration practice group at Bae, Kim & Lee, LLC. John, together with Kap-You (Kevin) Kim, leads a team of over 25 attorneys specialising in international arbitration and cross-border disputes. This practice group is recognised globally as a leader in international dispute resolution. In fact, in 2011 BKL became the first Korean firm to be included in the GAR30, a list published by Global Arbitration Review that recognises the 30 most active international arbitration practice groups worldwide.
Having represented parties in over 100 domestic and international arbitral proceedings seated in Asia, Europe and North America, with the value of disputes ranging from multimillions to multibillions of US dollars. Most of these disputes have proceeded through to the final hearing stage and concluded with a final award by the arbitral tribunal. John has acquired a deep reservoir of experience. He has had the opportunity to work side-by-side with some of the luminaries of the field (all of them listed in this literature), and has earned their respect through his incisive instincts and effective strategies.
John’s experience covers a wide spectrum of institutional rules (ie, the ICC, LCIA, SIAC, HKIAC, JCAA, AAA (ICDR), KCAB, ICSID and the arbitration rules of UNCITRAL) and a wide variety of industries, including construction, government contracts, golf course design and development, consumer retail, distributorships, hypermarkets, automobile manufacturing, automobile parts, financial services, banking, telecommunications, private equity, management consulting, steel manufacturing, online games, energy, oil and gas, post-M&A, pharmaceuticals, and petrochemicals. He also serves on arbitral tribunals as sole arbitrator or as chairman.
John has earned the respect of his peers as well as leading practitioners and arbitrators worldwide. Chambers Asia has recognised John as a Band 1 practitioner. It further states that he is a “key individual” in the market and offers praises for John’s “tremendous expertise in Korea and deft handling of cross-border disputes” and reports that clients have referred to him as their “top pick for any issue.” He has also been repeatedly listed in Who’s Who Legal: Arbitration (2007–2016) and in Asialaw Leading Lawyers (2008–2015). In 2011, John was included in Global Arbitration Review’s exclusive “45 under 45” list, which selected only five individuals from Asia.
He currently holds several noteworthy positions including: board member of the Korea Council for International Arbitration; officer in the IBA litigation committee (co-editor of the IBA International Litigation Newsletter); and member of the drafting committee for the ICCA Drafting Sourcebook and Checklist for Organising Arbitrations.
In 2011, John and his fellow co-founder Kevin were general editors of the first book-length treatise on arbitration in Korea, Arbitration Law of Korea: Practice and Procedure (Juris Publishing, 2012). John is also the author of various articles concerning international dispute resolution, and is a frequent speaker at domestic and international seminars and conferences.
After receiving his education at the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University School of Law, John served as a federal law clerk for the Honorable Kathryn C Ferguson, USBJ prior to joining BKL. He is fluent in English and Korean.
