Gian Luca Zampa graduated in law (JD, magna cum laude) from the University of Bologna in 1992. In 1995 he completed his first LLM in law at Queen Mary & Westfield College, University of London, while in 2000 he obtained a second LLM from Colombia University Law School, New York. He was admitted to the Italian Bar in 1995 and to the New York Bar in 2003. In 2012 Gian Luca was admitted to practice before the Italian Supreme Courts (Corte di Cassazione and the Consiglio di Stato).
He joined Freshfields in 2001 and became partner in 2005. His practice covers the whole range of merger control, cartel, state aid and other antitrust matters, both before the EU Commission and the Italian Antitrust Authority. He is also active in antitrust litigation both in civil as well as in administrative law courts in Italy and also represent clients before the EU courts in Luxembourg.
Before joining Freshfields, Gian Luca worked for three years at the Italian Antitrust Authority (IAA) as an officer and case handler, dealing with broadcasting (free-television and radio; pay TV, satellite and cable TV; broadcasting rights) and transportation markets and regularly representing the IAA before the EU Commission. He then worked in the antitrust department of the US law firm Wachtell Lipton Rosen & Katz in New York.
Gian Luca has published a number of competition law articles in Italian and European journals. In 2008, Global Competition Review (GCR) included Gian Luca amongst the world's leading 40 competition lawyers under the age of 40.
