Silvia D'Alberti is the head of Allen & Overy LLP's Italian antitrust group and has practised competition law for more than 20 years.
Her broad practice encompasses all aspects of EU and national competition and merger control laws, state aid and commercial transactions, regulatory matters and consumer protection law, at both advisory and litigation stages.
She has extensive experience of counselling and representing clients before the European Commission, the Italian Antitrust Authority (IAA) and the EU and Italian courts, on complex EU and Italian merger cases, behavioural investigations on restrictive horizontal and vertical practices, cartels, leniency proceedings, abuses of dominance, consumer protection investigations and antitrust litigation cases. She also regularly advises and provides her clients with training on antitrust compliance matters.
She has wide experience across a range of industry sectors, with a particular focus on oil and gas, energy, financial services, consumer goods and telecoms. Silvia’s recent experience includes representing an oil company as defendant in an antitrust private damage litigation pending before the Italian Enterprise Court in a follow-on claim from the IAA 2006 decision on the jet fuel investigation; a consumer goods company in a cartel investigation prompted by a leniency application before the IAA and its subsequent litigation; a freight forwarding company in a cartel investigation before the IAA and its subsequent litigation; in both cases, the fine originally imposed by the IAA was considerably reduced; a bank in a sector inquiry by the IAA into prices of bank services for customers; an insurance company in a merger filing before the EU Commission and a tobacco company in a referral for preliminary ruling under article 267 TFEU to the Court of Justice.
Silvia worked for five years at the IAA as an official and case handler prior to joining Allen & Overy, dealing mainly with energy, oil and gas and consumer protection.
Silvia is recognised by all the principal legal directories as a leading lawyer in the antitrust field (ranked in band one by Chambers Europe (Italy)). She is a member of the executive board of the Italian Antitrust Association and has been selected by the Milan Professional Women's Association and the Diversity Management Observatory of SDA Bocconi in the “Ready for Board Women” project.
Sources have described her as “clear, commercial, to the point and user-friendly”, and “a hugely popular figure with clients who appreciate her ‘incredibly business-friendly approach’. She handles all aspects of antitrust and is one of the founders of the Italian Antitrust Association.” (Quoted in Chambers Europe, 2014 edition.)
Silvia has published a number of articles on competition law in Italian and European journals and contributed the Italian chapter of Matthew Bender's, Antitrust Law and Trade Regulation.
She graduated in law (JD, magna cum laude) from the University of Rome and holds an LLM from Yale Law School. Silvia's mother tongue is Italian and she speaks English fluently.
