Shook Hardy & Bacon partner Michelle Fujimoto is former managing partner of the Orange County office and specialises in product liability litigation, with a focus on pharmaceutical and medical device defence. She has more than 25 years of experience in complex products liability, toxic tort and various science-driven litigations, and in the defence of mass tort litigation. Ms Fujimoto also provides risk management assessment and best practices counselling to clients ranging from start-up companies to Fortune 500 companies.
Ms Fujimoto has handled litigation for manufacturers of a wide range of pharmaceuticals, including therapeutics, hormone therapies, contraceptives, dietary drugs, immunosuppressants, smoking cessation and obesity therapies, allergy medications, antidepressants and anti-inflammatories. Her medical device experience includes heart valves, cardiovascular and cardiopulmonary products, neurovascular coils, endovascular products, orthopaedic products, CT scan injectors, surgical instruments and solutions, tracheotomy tubes, intraocular lenses, devices and solutions, respiratory protective devices and industrial chemicals. Ms Fujimoto’s trial experience includes the defence of medical device and drug design, drug discovery, chemical exposure, breach of contract involving the divestiture of product lines, research agreements, distributor agreements and environmental remediation agreements.
Ms Fujimoto is a member of the International Association of Defense Counsel (IADC), where she chairs the drug, device and biotech committee and serves on the diversity committee. She previously served as the vice-chair of publications, as well as vice-chair of programming for selected meetings. In addition, Ms Fujimoto is active in the Defense Research Institute (DRI), sitting on the steering committee for the drug and medical device section and on the programming committee for DRI's 2010 Women In Law Seminar. She is a member of California Women Lawyers as well as the Orange County and American Bar Associations.
Ms Fujimoto has lectured for the IADC and DRI, along with the California Continuing Education of the Bar, the American Bar Association and Mealey's Conferences. Honours and awards include selection to “Best California Lawyers” (2012) and “The Best Lawyers In America” (2011, 2013 and 2014); Who’s Who Legal: Product Liability Defence (2010–2013); and Expert Guide: Guide to the World’s Leading Product Liability Lawyers (2010). She was also nominated for the Orange County Business Journal’s 2009 Women In Business Award.
