Deirdre is an award-winning antitrust practitioner dealing with contentious and non-contentious antitrust matters. She was co-head of Freshfields’ antitrust, competition and trade group from 2000 to 2006, chair of sector groups in 2008 and global client partner from 2009 to 2012.
She has considerable experience of appearing before the UK Competition and Markets Authority, the EC Commission and other agencies worldwide.
Deirdre has been involved in a wide range of economic sectors, particularly retailing, consumer goods, financial services, media, energy and transport. She also has extensive experience in the liberalisation and regulation of these sectors under both EU and UK law.
Deirdre is ranked in the Chambers 100 of eminent lawyers in the UK, where she is noted for commercial awareness, communications skills, her “excellent concise advice and the ability to identify innovative solutions”. She has twice won The Lawyer’s Competition Lawyer of the Year award and was named the leading woman competition lawyer in Europe by Euromoney in 2011.
Recent highlights include: representing SSE in relation to the CMA's market investigation into the UK energy market, its intervention in an appeal of the electricity distribution price control and Ofgem’s Chapter II investigation into SSE’s connection business; advising Tesco on matters arising from the misstatement of its 2015 accounts including enforcement action by the Groceries Code Adjudicator; advising Telecity on the successful offer by Equinix and the negotiation of Phase 1 commitments with the EC Commission; advising hotel group IHG, on enforcement action by the CMA and other European competition agencies in relation to online travel agencies.
Deirdre holds an MA in politics, philosophy and economics from Oxford University.
