Deirdre is an award-winning antitrust practitioner dealing with contentious and non-contentious antitrust matters. She was co-head of Freshfields’ antitrust, competition and trade group (2000–2006), chair of sector groups (2008) and global client partner (2009–2012).
She has considerable experience of appearing before the UK Competition and Markets Authority, the EC Commission and other agencies worldwide.
Deirdre has been involved in a wide range of economic sectors, particularly retailing, consumer goods, financial services, the media, energy and transport. She also has extensive experience in the liberalisation and regulation of these sectors under both EU and UK law.
Deirdre is ranked in The Chambers 100, where she is noted for commercial awareness, communications skills, her “excellent concise advice and the ability to identify innovative solutions”. She has twice won The Lawyer Award for Competition Lawyer of the Year; in 2011 she was named the leading woman competition lawyer in Europe by Euromoney.
Recent highlights include: representing SSE in relation to the CMA's market investigation into the UK energy market; advising hotel group IHG, on enforcement action by the CMA and other European competition agencies in relation to on-line travel agencies; representing Deloitte during the Competition Commission review of audit services to large companies and the related EU Commission proposals; advising Tesco on the Groceries Market Investigation and the ground-breaking successful judicial review of that decision by the Competition Appeals Tribunal; and also in respect of the OFT’s Groceries, Tobacco and Dairy cases, the latter of which was successfully appealed to the Competition Appeals Tribunal.
Deirdre studied politics, philosophy and economics at Oxford.
