Who's Who Legal Arbitration: Lawyers

Michael E Schneider is a founding partner of Lalive. He has practised international arbitration for more than 40 years, acting as counsel before arbitration tribunals under various rules, including Swiss rules and those of the ICC, ICSID, UNCITRAL, the Dubai International Arbitration Centre (DIAC), the Cairo Regional Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (CRCICA), the European Development Fund (EDF), the LCIA, Geneva, Vienna and Stockholm Chambers of Commerce and UNECE, as well as before other international bodies including the WTO appellate body and the United Nations Compensation Commission. He has also been sitting as arbitrator (chair, sole or co-arbitrator) under the rules of many institutions both in Switzerland and abroad.

Michael E Schneider's main areas of practice include construction, industrial engineering and infrastructure projects, investment and other disputes involving states, natural resources (particularly oil and gas), environment, telecommunications and joint ventures.

Michael E Schneider is the immediate past president of the Swiss Arbitration Association; vice chair of the ICC commission on arbitration and a member of several of its working groups; president-elect of the International Academy of Construction Lawyers; and vice president of UNCITRAL and former chairman of the UNCITRAL working group II (arbitration and conciliation). He is a member of the board of trustees and the executive committee of the Dubai International Arbitration Centre; and the board of trustees of the Cairo Regional Centre of International Commercial Arbitration. He is a director of studies at the Centre for Studies and Research at The Hague Academy of International Law, and lectures on international contracts for the LLM programme of the University of Fribourg.

Michael E Schneider speaks fluent English, French and German and has basic knowledge of Italian, Spanish and Arabic.

Who's Who Legal Construction: Lawyers

Michael E Schneider is a founding partner of Lalive, an international law firm with offices in Geneva and Zurich in Switzerland, and Doha in Qatar (Lalive in Qatar LLC). His principal areas of practice include all aspects of international construction projects, predominantly dispute settlement through various mechanisms.

His experience relates to projects in the field of civil engineering, infrastructure, industrial engineering, building, environmental restoration and internal relations among consortium or joint venture partners. His expertise extends to a wide range of contracting methods, including EPC, turnkey, cost reimbursement and unit rates, and contract forms, including FIDIC, European Development Fund, UNECE and various national forms.

Michael E Schneider frequently sits as arbitrator in disputes involving large construction and infrastructure projects around the world, including a US$2 billion ICC arbitration regarding the construction of a power plant in northern Europe.

Prior to joining Lalive, Michael E Schneider served as in-house counsel to UNEFICO, the Swiss Bank Corporation consultants group, in charge of developing, financing and implementing engineering and other projects, primarily in developing countries.

He is president elect of the International Academy of Construction Lawyers and a member of the scientific council of the Swiss and International Construction Law Institute. He served as co-chair of the IBA international construction projects committee and its subcommittee on construction arbitration.

Michael E Schneider is co-head of Lalive’s construction and infrastructure practice group. The firm advises all industry participants in Switzerland and on a worldwide basis, including owners, governments, bidding consortia, contractors, engineers and suppliers.

Michael E Schneider has featured in Who’s Who Legal: Arbitration since 2005 and in Who’s Who Legal: Construction for many years. He is the immediate past president of the Swiss Arbitration Association. He speaks fluent English, French and German, and has basic knowledge of Italian, Spanish and Arabic.
