Who's Who Legal Arbitration: Lawyers

Matthias Scherer has acted as counsel in more than 200 arbitration and ADR proceedings in Switzerland and abroad, both ad hoc and administrated (ICC, Swiss Rules, UNCITRAL, ICSID, VIAC, CAS/TAS, Stockholm Chamber, LCIA, etc), including in ICC ADR and pre-arbitral referee proceedings, and subject to both civil and common law procedural and substantive laws. The emphasis of Mr Scherer's practice is on joint venture, shareholders, M&A, energy, construction and engineering, distribution and state-investor disputes. Mr Scherer is regularly appointed as arbitrator by leading arbitration institutions (ICC, ICSID, Swiss Chambers, LCIA, Dubai International Arbitration Centre (DIAC), Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce (SCC), the Netherlands Arbitration Institute (NAI), the Danish Institute of Arbitration, etc). He also frequently represents parties in arbitral matters before the Swiss Supreme Court.

For many years, he has featured in Who's Who Legal: Arbitration and Who's Who Legal: Construction, and has been ranked by Chambers and Partners. In 2006, he was selected as one of the 45 leading arbitration figures under 45 by Global Arbitration Review; and since 2014, he has featured in Chambers' global-wide ranking of international arbitration counsel.

Mr Scherer holds several editorial positions, including editor of the journal of the Swiss Arbitration Association (ASA Bulletin), co-editor of The Swiss International Arbitration Law Reports and The Swiss International Sports Arbitration Reports. He is a member of several arbitration associations and bodies; a past member of the arbitration committee of the Swiss Chambers and of the Geneva Chamber of Commerce and Industry; and a past vice chair of the arbitration committee of the International Bar Association (IBA).

Mr Scherer speaks fluent English, French and German and has a basic knowledge of Italian.

Matthias Scherer specialises in international litigation and arbitration, and commercial contracts. He has acted as counsel in more than 200 arbitration and ADR/mediation proceedings under various rules (including ICC, ICSID, Swiss Rules, LCIA, DIAC, Stockholm Chamber, NAI, CEDR, UNCITRAL, CAS/TAS, Vienna Chamber, etc), governed by a number of substantive laws (common and civil laws); he frequently represents parties in arbitral matters before the Swiss Supreme Court. Among his main areas of practice are construction law and engineering contracts. He advises owners and contractors on contentious and non-contentious matters relating to construction and infrastructure projects around the world. He is frequently appointed as arbitrator by parties and by leading arbitration institutions (ICSID, LCIA, ICC, Swiss Chambers, Dubai International Arbitration Center, Stockholm Chamber of Commerce, etc), in many cases for construction disputes. He regularly publishes on construction issues and is the Swiss correspondent for construction and engineering matters for International Law Office.

Matthias Scherer has also featured in Who’s Who Legal: Commercial Arbitration since its inception in 2005, as well as Who’s Who Legal: Construction; he is currently ranked among the top 75 arbitration practitioners worldwide by Chambers Global. He is the editor of the journal of The Swiss Arbitration Association, ASA Bulletin, and co-editor of The Swiss International Arbitration Law Reports. He is also a past vice chair of the IBA arbitration committee, past member of the arbitration committee of the Swiss Chambers of Commerce, member of the IBA section on energy, environment, natural resources and infrastructure, and the IBA international construction projects committee.
