Matthias Scherer has acted as counsel in more than 200 arbitration and ADR proceedings in Switzerland and abroad, both ad hoc and administrated (ICC, Swiss Rules, UNCITRAL, ICSID, VIAC, CAS/TAS, Stockholm Chamber, LCIA, etc), including in ICC ADR and pre-arbitral referee proceedings, and subject to both civil and common law procedural and substantive laws. The emphasis of Mr Scherer's practice is on joint venture, shareholders, M&A, energy, construction and engineering, distribution and state-investor disputes. Mr Scherer is regularly appointed as arbitrator by leading arbitration institutions (ICC, ICSID, Swiss Chambers, LCIA, Dubai International Arbitration Centre (DIAC), Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce (SCC), the Netherlands Arbitration Institute (NAI), the Danish Institute of Arbitration, etc). He also frequently represents parties in arbitral matters before the Swiss Supreme Court.
For many years, he has featured in Who's Who Legal: Arbitration and Who's Who Legal: Construction, and has been ranked by Chambers and Partners. In 2006, he was selected as one of the 45 leading arbitration figures under 45 by Global Arbitration Review; and since 2014, he has featured in Chambers' global-wide ranking of international arbitration counsel.
Mr Scherer holds several editorial positions, including editor of the journal of the Swiss Arbitration Association (ASA Bulletin), co-editor of The Swiss International Arbitration Law Reports and The Swiss International Sports Arbitration Reports. He is a member of several arbitration associations and bodies; a past member of the arbitration committee of the Swiss Chambers and of the Geneva Chamber of Commerce and Industry; and a past vice chair of the arbitration committee of the International Bar Association (IBA).
Mr Scherer speaks fluent English, French and German and has a basic knowledge of Italian.
