Bill Sampson is a partner at Shook Hardy & Bacon LLP. He has tried more than 80 jury cases in federal, state, and military courts and tribunals and has been active nationally and internationally in the defence of civil litigation. He has taught more than 100 programmes on trial practice, litigation strategy, and legal writing.
Mr Sampson has defended product liability claims in state and federal courts throughout the United States, both as national coordinating counsel for industry-wide claims and in high-visibility individual actions. He has also successfully represented clients in international disputes, breach of contract matters, consumer class action litigation and litigation before the US Bankruptcy Court and Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation.
Mr Sampson is listed in Best Lawyers in America, for bet-the-company litigation; commercial litigation; banking and finance litigation; and product liability, and was also named the Kansas City lawyer of the year. He also appears in Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business (as a top-tier “leading individual”), Who's Who Legal: Product Liability and Expert Guides: Guide to the World's Leading Product Liability Lawyers. Mr Sampson is recognised as a "Missouri Litigation Star" in Benchmark Litigation: The Definitive Guide to America’s Leading Litigation Firms & Attorneys and was included in the 2012 edition of Ingram’s professional services special report and Super Lawyers: Business Edition (2012).
Mr Sampson is a member of the Defense Research Institute (DRI), for which he served as national president between 2003 and 2004 and chaired DRI's 2014 corporate counsel roundtable after serving as vice-chair of the roundtable in 2013. He is a member of (and previously served on) the national board of directors for the American Board of Trial Advocates. He is a member of the International Association of Defense Counsel, having served on the faculty of its trial academy, and of the Association of Defense Trial Attorneys; he is also a fellow of the American Bar Foundation. He was president of the National Foundation for Judicial Excellence and remains on its board.
Mr Sampson is licensed in Kansas and Missouri and admitted to practise before the US Courts of Appeal for the Seventh, Eighth and Tenth Circuits, the US District Court for the District of Kansas and the US District Court for the Western District of Missouri. He has practiced in state and federal courts throughout the country.
A distinguished graduate of the University of Kansas School of Law, Mr Sampson is the author of Kansas Trial Handbook, published in 1997 by Thomson/West and supplemented thereafter.
