Tom Ottervanger is of counsel based in Allen & Overy LLP's Amsterdam office and specialises in European law and (European and Dutch) competition law. He has been involved in a large number of proceedings at the European Court in such areas as state aid law, free movement of goods and services and competition law. Tom has broad experience in advising and assisting clients in national civil and administrative procedures in these areas, as well as in the field of concentration control and liberalisation issues in industries such as postal services, telecommunications, energy and health care. He regularly publishes articles and is the co-author of books on concentration control, state aid and European and national competition law.
Tom is a part-time professor of European and competition law at the University of Leiden and is also a visiting professor at the LUISS University in Rome. Previously, he was a part-time professor of European law at the Free University of Brussels (1990–2000) and a visiting professor at the University of Georgia. Tom is also a deputy justice at the Court of Appeal in The Hague, and chairman of the appeals committee of the Amsterdam Power Exchange (APX).
The 2012 edition of Chambers Europe ranked Tom as a senior lawyer, and stated: “Tom Ottervanger is seen as one of the doyens of competition law in the Dutch market. He combines his practice with teaching at the University of Leiden. Peers comment: 'He is knowledgeable and operates with flair and charm'.”
