Who's Who Legal Competition: Lawyers

Dr Frank Montag is member of the Cologne and Brussels bars and a senior partner in Freshfields’ antitrust, competition and trade group, based in Brussels.

Recently named “Global Competition Lawyer of the Year” by the Who’s Who Legal for the sixth consecutive year, Frank has over 25 years’ experience of guiding his clients through some of the world’s most complex merger transactions (such as the recent Holcim/Lafarge and Siemens/Dresser Rand mergers) and investigations into anti-competitive practices, including abuse of dominance (eg, in the technology sector) and cartels (eg, the defence for Schenker in the blocktrains investigation). His practice also spans European state aid law and international trade proceedings, and he is an experienced advocate before the European courts.

Since June 2006, Frank has served as chairman of the Antitrust Lawyers Association for Germany, Austria and Switzerland (Studienvereinigung Kartellrecht). He has been appointed non-governmental adviser to the delegation of the US Department of Justice (2003), the European Commission (2004–2005) and the Bundeskartellamt (German Federal Cartel Office, 2007–2016) at the International Competition Network (ICN) conferences. A frequent lecturer on subjects of European, German and international competition law, he is also co-editor of Competition Law: European Community Practice and Procedure (Sweet & Maxwell) and Münchner Kommentar zum Wettbewerbsrecht (Beck).

Frank is chairman of the firm’s finance and risk committee. He has held numerous other management positions in the firm including co-head of the global antitrust group (2000–2006) and managing partner of the Brussels office (1990–2000).

Frank graduated from the United World College of the Atlantic, Wales (IB 1976) and the universities of Bonn (Dr iur 1984) and Georgia (LLM 1982).

Freshfields’ antitrust competition and trade practice comprises more than 50 partners and over 210 other specialists working worldwide to support our clients wherever and whenever they need us.
