Bertrand studied at the London School of Economics (MSc Economics). He joined Slaughter and May in 1992 and became a partner in 2001. He has worked in both the London and Brussels offices. Bertrand's practice spans merger control, competition investigations, competition litigation and market inquiries.
Bertrand has extensive experience of representing clients before the European Commission and the Competition and Markets Authority. His recent mergers experience includes advising Shell on its recommended offer for BG Group and on the disposal of its Danish downstream business to SFR, Regus in relation to its acquisition of Avanta, and Spirit on its takeover by Greene King.
Bertrand also has extensive experience of advising on contentious antitrust issues. His recent matters include advising Platts in respect of the EC’s oil and biofuels investigations and British Airways in respect of the multi-jurisdictional air cargo damages litigation and its appeal to the General Court in Luxembourg. He is also currently advising on the investigations into foreign exchange trading and aircraft aftermarkets.
Bertrand is fluent in French. He is listed as a leading individual for EU and competition law in The Legal 500, 2015 and for competition/European law: non-contentious (Band 1) in Chambers, 2016.
