Who's Who Legal Capital Markets: Debt and Equity

Asue Ighodalo is a founding partner of Banwo & Ighodalo, a foremost corporate commercial law firm in Nigeria. He obtained his first degree in economics from the University of Ibadan, a law degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science; and was admitted into the Nigerian Bar in July 1985.

His core areas of practice are capital markets, mergers and acquisitions, restructuring, corporate and project finance, and energy and natural resources, in all of which he possesses extensive experience.

Specifically, as regards the capital market space, Asue has for many years led the firm’s advisory teams in a majority of diverse domestic and international capital market transactions launched by leading Nigerian banks, including Access Bank, Diamond Bank, Fidelity Bank, First Bank, Guaranty Trust Bank and Zenith Bank and other issuers, with instruments ranging from shares and bonds to global depository receipts and global depository notes. He has also advised on several first-in-kind capital market transactions involving Nigerian issuers such as Access Bank’s exchange offer to holders of its outstanding Eurobonds and Guaranty Trust Bank’s Eurobond tender offer. Most remarkably, Asue has advised the Federal Republic of Nigeria on all its international capital market transactions, to date.

Asue is the chairman of Sterling Bank plc and Dangote Flour Mills plc and also serves on boards of several other public and private companies, NGOs and the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority.

Asue is consistently ranked as a top-tier lawyer by leading legal directories. His hobbies include golfing, watching football, reading, traveling and participating in political discourse. He is married and blessed with a daughter.

WWL says: Asue Ighodalo is widely respected among peers who consider him “an excellent capital markets practitioner”.
