Susan Hutton is a senior partner in Stikeman Elliott's competition and foreign investment and international trade groups. She has provided Competition Act and Investment Canada Act advice in respect of numerous complex mergers and acquisitions, for example Canexus/Superior Plus, MTS Allstream/Accelero and CNOOC/Nexen. She has guided clients through civil and criminal investigations as well as complaints under the Competition Act, and provides ongoing compliance advice to numerous clients. She is recognised by Chambers Global and Chambers Canada, which quotes sources as saying she "is superbly pragmatic and understands the issues internationally," and that "her knowledge of the competition regime is incredible". She is consistently recommended by The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory, and is named as one of The Best Lawyers in Canada for competition law.
Ms Hutton worked in the field of economic research, including econometric modelling with the Bank of Canada, prior to entering law. She has worked in Bangkok and Singapore; has advised the government of Vietnam regarding the development of its competition law; and is a member of Stikeman Elliott's China task force. Ms Hutton is member of the Competition Policy Council of the CD Howe Institute. She is past chair of the competition law section of the Canadian Bar Association and past chair of the editorial board of the Canadian Competition Law Review. She is also active in the antitrust section of the ABA as well as the IBA antitrust committee. Ms Hutton publishes and speaks frequently on topics in her fields.
