Günther J Horvath heads the DR practice in the Vienna office of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and is a partner also in the corporate practice group.
He has over 35 years experience in advising family-owned companies on corporate reorganisation and restructuring, succession and strategic planning and private M&A transactions.
His expertise in international commercial arbitration has a primary focus on energy matters and corporate disputes as well as industrial engineering. He acted as counsel and arbitrator in well over hundred high-profile disputes under the Rules of ICC, VIAC and in ad-hoc arbitrations.
Günther J Horvath is vice president of the Vienna International Arbitral Centre (VIAC), a former member of the ICC International Court of Arbitration, past chair of the IBA committee on closely held and growing business enterprises, chairman emeritus of Lex Mundi Ltd, Houston, and a member of the Austrian Bar Association.
Günther J Horvath frequently speaks at conferences and publishes on the topics of arbitration, corporate law, and industrial property law. Books and articles in the field of international arbitration include: Guerilla Tactics in International Arbitration (editor und co-author, Kluwer Law International, 2013), Cost in International Arbitration (Linde, 2008), Der Schutz heimischer Investoren im Ausland (Schriftenreihe Nö. Juristische Gesellschaft 2014) and Schiedsgerichte stärken Europäer vor dem US-Gericht (Der Standard 2015).
Günther J Horvath received his legal education at the Universities of Graz (Doctor of Laws – Dr iur, 1976) and New York (MCJ, 1977). He joined the firm in 1978 and has been a partner since 1982.
Günther speaks English, German and basic Italian.
