Michael W Davis is head of Sidley’s products liability and mass torts practice and serves as secretary of Sidley’s executive committee. Mr Davis is extensively engaged in the nationwide defense of product liability claims involving pharmaceuticals, chemicals, consumer products, and food products. His practice also emphasises complex multiparty and class action litigation. Mr Davis has served as national coordinating counsel in pharmaceutical, food products, and chemical litigation. He has successfully argued or tried more than 50 motions for class certification.
Mr Davis has handled product safety issues arising under the Consumer Product Safety Act. He also has performed product liability due diligence investigations in connection with potential corporate acquisitions, and has counselled clients on product warnings and labelling, on product liability indemnification agreements, and on proposed tort reform legislation.
Mr Davis has lectured at seminars on various evidentiary matters and has written many articles on pharmaceutical, product liability, and toxic tort litigation. He is the author of “Strict Liability in Tort in Product Liability Cases”, published in the Illinois Product Liability Practice Handbook, from the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education (1990, 1996, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2006, 2009, and 2011 editions). He is a member of the American Bar Association, the Chicago Bar Association, the Defense Research Institute, the Illinois State Bar Association, and the International Association of Defense Counsel.
Mr Davis received his JD (cum laude) from Northwestern University School of Law in 1975 and his BA (magna cum laude) from Binghamton University in 1972. Admissions include: US Supreme Court; Illinois; various US Court of Appeals and US District Courts.
