In this edition, we feature 764 of the world’s leading arbitration practitioners from over 400 firms across 88 jurisdictions, providing a comprehensive overview of the international arbitration market. Our analysis spans the whole gamut of legal offerings around the world, from large international outfits to arbitration boutiques and independent practitioners, identifying the most prominent and esteemed individuals currently practising in the space. 

Arbitration - Future Leaders 2018: Analysis

For the second year we shine the spotlight on the pre-eminent lawyers aged 45 or under at the end of 2018, who the market considers to be the future leaders of the arbitration profession. The research covers law firms and independent practices, and a total of 521 individuals with exemplary standing as arbitrators and counsel are highlighted here.  

Arbitration 2018: Expert Witnesses Analysis

In this edition we highlight 219 practitioners across 63 jurisdictions who are recognised internationally for the quality of their testimony in arbitration proceedings.

Future Leaders - Arbitration 2017: Analysis

In this section we pick out the firms with the highest number of nominees selected for inclusion and the nominees who received the largest number of recommendations.

Our listing criteria require nominees to be aged 45 or under at the end of 2016. We list outstanding arbitrators and counsel both independent and from law firms, and at partner and non-partner level.

Furthermore we include academics and in select cases nominees from arbitral institutions, provided they continue to accept independent arbitration work; sadly this leaves many first class experts in government and elsewhere unrecognised in this edition, but WWL is primarily a guide to retaining - or referring to - legal counsel and arbitrators.

Arbitration 2017: Analysis

Arbitration continues to go from strength to strength, with an ever-greater number of parties turning to international tribunals to resolve their disputes. In this edition we select the leading 845 arbitrators and counsel from nearly 500 firms, as identified by their clients, opponents and peers.

In this section we pick out the firms with the largest number of featured lawyers in order, as well as the individuals who scored most highly in our voting around the world.

Arbitration 2017: Expert Witnesses Analysis

The number of nominees in this section continues to grow, driven by the recognition from arbitrators, counsel and parties of the integral role expert witnesses play in arbitration proceedings. This section is a reflection of the depth of expertise in consulting firms around the world. We list 212 practitioners from 17 countries for the quality of their work in arbitrations.

As the use of expert witnesses in arbitration hearings continues to gather pace, so does the recognition of the leading players in the field worldwide. This year we list 165 practitioners commended for their expertise in relation to international arbitration proceedings.

This year’s edition identifies world-class practitioners in 89 countries – a wider geographical spread than ever before, which reflects the ever-growing use and sophistication of international arbitration. In total we list 812 arbitrators and counsel from 481 firms as leaders in this field; in this section we pick out the firms with the most listed lawyers in order, as well as the individuals who scored most highly in our voting.

Expert Witnesses Marketplace Analysis

Our expert witness section is now in its third edition, reflecting the sophisticated use of expert witnesses in arbitration hearings and the growing number of such experts globally recognised for their abilities. This year we list 123 practitioners, nearly 20 per cent more than last year, as an ever-greater number of individuals are recognised internationally for the quality of their testimony in arbitration proceedings.

Legal Marketplace Analysis

In this section we analyse the findings of our research in greater depth to recognise the firms and lawyers who stand out for their arbitration expertise on a global level. This year, we identify 733 practitioners from 441 firms and 86 countries as the leading practitioners in the field, following votes from clients and peers.
