Our expert witness section is now in its third edition, reflecting the sophisticated use of expert witnesses in arbitration hearings and the growing number of such experts globally recognised for their abilities. This year we list 123 practitioners, nearly 20 per cent more than last year, as an ever-greater number of individuals are recognised internationally for the quality of their testimony in arbitration proceedings.
In this section we analyse the findings of our research in greater depth to recognise the firms and lawyers who stand out for their arbitration expertise on a global level. This year, we identify 733 practitioners from 441 firms and 86 countries as the leading practitioners in the field, following votes from clients and peers.
An increasing number of clients are turning to arbitration as the benefits of confidential proceedings which are tailored to suit the parties outweigh other forms of dispute resolution. Providing expert witnesses is a critical stage of the process which can be the decisive factor in the outcome of the hearing. The growing popularity of the use of expert witnesses in arbitration hearings is reflected in our research. We have included 103 outstanding specialists in this edition, an increase of 14 from last year.
This edition identifies 624 arbitrators and counsel from 84 countries around the world, our broadest geographical spread to date. Each nominee stands out for the high number of recommendations they received from the clients, peers and expert witnesses we canvassed and are the outstanding practitioners in the field.
The financial crisis has forced many clients to pursue only those disputes which are critical to their business. These crucial hearings often involve economic, financial or accountancy issues which require the knowledge of an independent and dedicated expert witness and this testimony can be the critical decisive factor which prompts a settlement or decides the outcome of a hearing. The following outstanding individuals have proven technical expertise and credibility in their chosen fields as well as years of experience providing vital oral testimony in domestic and international arbitrations. We have included 89 outstanding specialists in this edition.

Who’s Who Legal identifies the leading expert witnesses in the field of commercial arbitration. The response to our research was very positive, allowing us to expand our list from 59 experts to 82. Not only do these individuals have an outstanding depth of knowledge in their area of expertise, whether it be financial valuation, accountancy or construction, but they are also recognised for their skill in giving expert oral evidence in commercial arbitrations, encompassing examination in chief, cross-examination and, increasingly, witness conferencing.
We have spent months researching the global commercial arbitration legal marketplace and have selected the 531 arbitrators and counsel recommended to us. All who are listed here who can be considered pre-eminent in the field and are well respected by clients, corporate counsel and peers. For the first time, we also include expert witnesses in our survey and these are acknowledged leaders in fields such as forensic accountancy, construction and economics. We have selected 59 individuals who specialise in commercial arbitration proceedings.
