This year’s edition of WWL: France features almost 300 firms, from boutique offerings through to full-service outfits. However over a quarter of total listings this year come from 10 standout firms that we profile below.

International law firm ALLEN & OVERY performs well in this year’s research achieving a total of 22 listings across 16 practice areas. In this edition, the firm showcases the great breadth and depth of its offering in the French market, achieving nominations across a wide range of sectors.

The firm performs well in the life sciences sector and is among the top firms advising on related commercial transactions, IP matters, regulatory issues and disputes. Standout names from the group include Laëtitia Bénard, who is recognised as one of the most highly regarded practitioners for life sciences and patents work in this year’s research.

The firm illustrates its strong offering when it comes to disputes work, receiving nominations across our arbitration, litigation and product liability defence chapters as well as its corporate finance expertise.  

Other leading individuals include Denis Chemla, a standout commercial litigator; Florence Ninane for her impressive knowledge of competition law; and Hervé Ekué, who draws high praise for his first-rate capital markets practice.

The firm is home to more than 150 practitioners, who deliver high-quality legal services to key players in the French business world as well as prominent companies across the globe. This year, our research recognises 15 of its leading lawyers across seven practice areas.

The firm assists clients across a wide range of industry sectors, and is particularly well known for its members’ excellent work in the technology space achieving two nominations this year. In addition to this, the firm also illustrates its strong employment law offering seeing five standout specialists highlighted in this edition. Key individuals in this area include managing partner Emmanuelle Barbara and Philippe Durand who earn recognition for their first-class practices and impressive expertise in the field.

A number of prominent individuals at the firm achieve listings across multiple chapters including François Pochart and Grégoire Desrousseaux who are recognised for their top-tier work in the fields of patent law and life sciences.

Leading French law firm BREDIN PRAT boasts an excellent reputation in the market, achieving 29 listings in this edition across an impressive 12 practice areas. Since it was founded in 1966, the firm has grown to house more than 180 lawyers across its offices in Paris and Brussels, lending it a strong position in the international marketplace.

The firm’s corporate practice group stands out in our research as one of the leading teams in the country, with practitioners well versed in handling M&A, corporate governance and corporate tax matters. Competition is another area in which the firm performs strongly, achieving five nominations. The firm offers a wide range of services across all aspects of French and European competition law, regularly advising domestic and international clients on matters such as merger control, cartels, abuse of dominance cases and state aid.

A number of individuals perform exceptionally well in our research this year, and are highlighted for their superb work across multiple practice areas. Among them are Raphaële Courtier, who stands out for his extensive banking and project finance expertise, and Didier Martin who impresses commentators with his excellent work across the areas of capital markets and M&A and governance.

International powerhouse CLIFFORD CHANCE stands out as one of the leading firms in the French market, with over 180 lawyers providing expert advice on a number of areas. The firm achieves listings across 15 chapters this year highlighting its full-service offering.

The firm particularly excels when it comes to energy and project finance law, with practitioners well equipped to handle financial, regulatory and commercial matters on behalf of clients. The firm also demonstrates its strong disputes practice with lawyers achieving nominations for their work handling both arbitration and litigation proceedings.

The firm is home to some of the top names in the French legal market including David Tayar who is recognised for his first-class competition law practice. Anthony Giustini is highlighted for his exceptional expertise in project finance, mining and energy-related matters, reflecting his position as one of the most sought-after names in the market.

CMS FRANCIS LEFEBVRE AVOCATS demonstrates its position as one of the leading firms in the French market in this edition achieving 25 listings across seven practice areas. It particularly stands out for its phenomenal corporate tax expertise, where it sees 16 practitioners recognised. With a full-service international corporate practice, the firm advises on large-scale legal matters in both the French, European and international markets.

The firm’s corporate tax practice covers the entire gamut of matters including indirect taxation, VAT, customs duties, audit, M&A and tax litigation. The firm also boasts experts in administrative tax litigation and private client tax, illustrating the breadth of its offering in the field.

The firm also stands out in the private client sphere, achieving four nominations this year. Lawyers are frequently engaged in a range of related matters including inheritance, family, corporate and governance law for family offices and high-net-worth individuals.

Leading names in the Paris office include Bruno Gouthière, who is a prominent figure in international taxation and private client matters. François Tenailleau is a well-respected name in administrative litigation and government contracts law while Bernard Geneste is recognised for his strong expertise across the life sciences sector.

Since its establishment in 1993, DE PARDIEU BROCAS MAFFEI has stood out as one of France’s leading law firms. It illustrates its strong position in the domestic market in our research this year by achieving 15 nominations across seven practice areas.

The firm performs particularly well in our real estate chapter, achieving four listings and showcasing its position as the foremost offering in the sector. The group’s clients include property companies as well as financial institutions including investment funds and other lending entities.

Its competition group also excels, with three practitioners recognised for their impressive expertise in the field of both domestic and EU competition law.

Outstanding lawyers at the firm include Guillaume Rossignol and Emmanuel Fatôme, who boast world-class expertise in the real estate space, while Philippe Dubois is recognised for his excellent work in the restructuring and insolvency field.

Independent French law firm GIDE LOYRETTE NOUEL remains the pre-eminent outfit in the domestic legal market achieving 46 listings this year – 17 more nominations than any other firm in the country.

Its IP offering performs particularly well this year, with five leading patents lawyers and three standout trademarks experts recognised in our corresponding chapters. As one of the firm’s core practice areas, it is unsurprising that it excels in the market and boasts the foremost patents team in France. Practitioners are recognised for their leading expertise handling the whole gamut of related matters from development through to defence work.

The firm also demonstrates its strong disputes offering, with both its litigation and arbitration groups well recognised in this edition, achieving three and four listings respectively. The teams are well equipped to provide top representation to clients across a range of sectors from banking and finance through to TMT.

The breadth of expertise on offer at Gide is clearly reflected in this edition, as it receives nominations across a wide range of industry sectors including data, energy, mining, life sciences and corporate finance.

Standout practitioners at the firm include the exceptional Frédéric Nouel, who is a Thought Leader in the real estate field. Grégoire Triet is recognised for his outstanding patents practice while Nadège Nguyen and Christophe Eck win praise for their world-class corporate work.

With 26 listings this year, HOGAN LOVELLS stands out as a powerhouse firm in the French market. The full-service international law firm achieves listings across 16 chapters, illustrating the impressive breadth of expertise at the Paris office, spanning the full gamut of practice areas.

The firm performs particularly well for product liability defence matters, where it tops the market with four practitioners from the practice group highlighted. The team is well versed in advising clients on related regulatory and contentious matters. It is also among the most prominent players for public law matters and achieves four listings across the administrative litigation and government contracts chapters. The firm also demonstrates its broad sector-related expertise, achieving listings across a wide array of industries from transport and energy to life sciences.

Prominent individuals at the firm include Cécile Derycke who is recognised for his leading life sciences practice. Sharon Lewis stands out for her impressive expertise in capital markets while Thomas Rouhette receives plaudits for his exceptional product liability defence work.

Full-service international outfit LINKLATERS boasts a strong presence in the French market and demonstrates its capabilities in the jurisdiction with 22 listings across 14 practice areas in this edition. It established in Paris over 40 years ago and continues to stand out in the market.

This year, the firm demonstrates its market-leading arbitration offering with four practitioners nominated for their exceptional work advising international companies and states on a range of high-value proceedings.

The firm also excels in the project finance arena, where the team acts on multi-jurisdictional projects matters, particularly with a financial services aspect, advising governments, contractors, lenders and suppliers across several industry sectors.

Leading names at the Paris office include François April who is recognised for his strong expertise in energy and project finance matters. Paul Lignières receives high praise for his public law and litigation practice while Roland Ziadé is highlighted as one of the foremost arbitration practitioners in the country.

Full-service international firm WHITE & CASE is a long-standing fixture in the French market and boasts a stellar reputation as one of its leading outfits. Its Paris office performs well in this edition, achieving 22 nominations across 12 practice areas, illustrating its broad offering.

The firm particularly excels when it comes to arbitration. It achieves four nominations this year demonstrating its position as one of the leading practice groups in the country. It is also well recognised for its strong expertise across the construction industry with five standout practitioners highlighted this year for their work handling related contracts, disputes and financings. 

The firm is home to a number of excellent lawyers including Charles Nairac and Christopher Seppälä who draw praise for their outstanding work in the construction and arbitration fields, while Michael Polkinghorne is highlighted as one of the leading arbitration practitioners in the country.
