2018: Leading Firms

We list over 150 law firms in WWL: Mexico 2018, from full-service offerings to boutique firms, demonstrating the breadth of expertise and variety of choice available to clients seeking representation in the country. However almost a third of all listings in this edition are earned by lawyers from just six standout firms, all of which are profiled below.  

BASHAM RINGE Y CORREA is one of the largest and best-established law firms in Mexico. It boasts a leading presence throughout the domestic market, as demonstrated in our research this year, in which it achieves the second-highest number of listings of any firm. It receives 24 nominations across 13 practice areas, showcasing not only the depth of its expertise but also the breadth of its offering.

Its world-class corporate team dominates the Mexican market, with six individuals highlighted in this edition for their exceptional expertise in the space. Its lawyers are well versed in the whole gamut of commercial and corporate transactions, restructurings and acquisitions across a range of industries. The firm also performs well across a variety of sectors, from energy and mining to TMT and construction.  

Leading names at the firm include Daniel Del Río and Juan Carlos Serra Campillo, who stand out as the most highly regarded corporate practitioners in the country and win praise for their strong mining expertise. Meanwhile Martín Michaus and Mario Barrera Vázquez are recognised for their respective trademarks and corporate tax practices.


Full-service domestic firm CREEL GARCÍA-CUÉLLAR AIZA Y ENRÍQUEZ once again performs well in our research, cementing its position as one of the leading outfits in the Mexican market. It illustrates the depth and breadth of its expertise achieving 19 listings across 11 practice areas.

The firm particularly stands out for its superb banking practice, from which five impressive lawyers achieve nominations this year. The team is well equipped to handle a whole gamut of banking and finance matters, from acquisition to structured financings on behalf of lenders, borrowers and financial institutions. The firm also boasts excellent services across a range of other sectors, including energy, construction and real estate.

Leading practitioners at the firm include Carlos Aiza who gains recognition for his exceptional expertise across banking, construction and real estate and restructuring and insolvency law. Meanwhile, Carlos de Icaza stands out as one of the leading environmental lawyers in the country, and Santiago Sepúlveda is highlighted for his top-tier project finance practice. 


Full-service law firm GALICIA ABOGADOS demonstrates its strong position in the Mexican market, achieving 23 listings across ten practice areas in our research this year. Founded in 1994, the firm is one of the country’s most highly respected outfits in the fields of banking, capital markets and M&A and is well known for its specialist knowledge in these areas. This is borne out by our research, where the firm excels in throughout our corporate finance chapters. The banking practice in particular covers the gamut of legal matters including regulation and compliance, structuring and handling of financial transactions, with lawyers representing both creditors and debtors in such matters.

Standout practitioners at the firm include founding partner Manuel Galicia, who is renowned as a transactions guru and achieves listings across five chapters this year. Energy and project finance head Carlos de Maria Y Campos is listed in four of our chapters: banking, capital markets, energy and project finance. He receives high praise for his finance expertise and his ability to deploy it across numerous industry sectors. Arturo Perdomo is a powerhouse in banking and finance. He is a long-standing figure in these sectors and is renowned as one of the country’s leading lawyers.


HOGAN LOVELLS’ multidisciplinary team achieves 21 listings across 11 practice areas in this year’s research. The international firm enjoys a stellar reputation as one of the world’s top commercial law firms and boasts a strong presence in the Mexican market.

Areas of significant expertise include corporate strategy, transactional work, regulatory advice and dispute resolution. The firm boasts a formidable disputes practice, and sees three lawyers listed in the arbitration chapter. Eminent individuals include Eduardo Siqueiros T and Luis Enrique Graham, who are both widely endorsed as leaders in the space. A further five listings are achieved across the commercial and administrative litigation chapters. Luis Omar Guerrero Rodríguez is a deeply impressive practitioner who achieves recognition across all three chapters. 

With four listings, the firm ranks among the top firms for labour and employment work. Standout individuals include Hugo Hernández-Ojeda Alvírez, one of our most highly regarded practitioners in the area. Bernardo Herrerías Franco also achieves particular recognition in this edition as a market-leading IP lawyer. 


Premier multidisciplinary firm RITCH MUELLER HEATHER Y NICOLAU once again stands out in our research as one of the foremost firms in the Mexican legal market, achieving 25 listings across nine practice areas. Originally established in 1975 as a specialised corporate finance practice, the firm has since expanded into a range of corresponding practice areas, including energy, real estate and aviation.

Project finance is an area in which the firm truly excels, as it boasts the pre-eminent team in the country, achieving eight listings this year. It also ranks prominently for its banking expertise, achieving five nominations and illustrates its traditionally strong corporate finance offering with three nominations in our M&A and governance chapter.

Outstanding practitioners identified by our research include Thomas Mueller-Gastell, Thomas Heather and José Antonio Calvo Díaz, who are singled out as the top project finance lawyers in Mexico according to our research. Another prominent figure at the firm is Rodrigo Conesa Labastida, who tops our rankings in construction and real estate.

A number of practitioners at the firm achieve multiple chapter listings this year, including Thomas Heather who is highlighted for his top-tier work in an impressive five practice areas, while Federico Santacruz González stands out for his strong energy, project finance, and aviation practice.


Founded more than 70 years ago, SANTAMARINA Y STETA has grown to become one of the most highly regarded firms in the Mexican market. The firm is home to more than 100 professionals, who deliver legal services of the highest standard to major players in Mexico’s business community and numerous clients across the globe. This year’s research sees 19 leading practitioners highlighted across 13 practice areas, demonstrating the comprehensive range of services the firm provides.

Financial services are at the heart of the firm’s offering, with practitioners handling a range of matters from syndicated loans and asset financing to private banking. It is therefore unsurprising that the firm performs particularly well in the banking chapter, achieving an impressive four nominations. Among them are top-tier practitioners Vicente Grau and Alberto Saavedra, who also feature in our project finance chapter thanks to their excellent work in the area.

A number of other practitioners also achieve multiple listings, including Fernando de Castillo who ranks prominently in our commercial litigation and restructuring and insolvency sections, as well as Juan Carlos Machorro and Aarón Levet, two banking experts who are also identified as leading individuals in the aviation, and construction and real estate areas respectively.
