Ritch Mueller Heather y Nicolau SC

Ritch Mueller Heather y Nicolau earns its status as the most prevalent law firm in our research by focusing on its transactional teams, ensuring that they are among the very strongest in the country. As a result, the firm is often the first port of call for banking and finance transactions. Outside these main areas the firm’s individual partners have developed some further specialisations, with recognition in real estate, aviation, energy and environmental mandates.

The banking and finance team is an undisputed market leader with a plethora of the country’s leading dealmakers in its partnership. Clients include some of the biggest national banks and multinational lenders, which the team advise on a wide variety of syndicated, secured and unsecured lending. Department co-heads Luis Nicolau and Jean Paul Farah are very active and widely respected in the international community. Last year, Farah was lead counsel to the lenders in a US$194 million syndicated loan to Grupo Cimentos de Chihuahua. Pablo Perezalonso Eguía, Thomas Heather and Ricardo Calderón Pablo are also top-ranked.

In terms of project finance transactions the team are second to none. Ricardo Calderón, Jean Paul Farah and Thomas Heather are again recognised in this chapter, along with a further five nominees. Mario Juárez is a recurring name in large infrastructure projects; one recent deal of note was assisting private equity group First Reserve and Mexico Power in obtaining finance for a 130MW windfarm. Jorge Oria is widely praised for his work in high-profile financings, including to the lenders in the US$820 million financing of Fermaca’s natural gas pipeline in northern Mexico. Meanwhile, Federico Santacruz is recognised as a leader in both project and aircraft finance. Olivo Villa is also particularly prominent in aviation finance mandates, recently representing Airbus in relation to a 52-strong A320 aircraft fleet order by VivaAerobus.

On the capital markets front, Carlos Obregón is well-noted adviser to underwriters and issuers on debt and equity offerings, as well as private equity funds. Luis Nicolau is another key partner in this team, with market respondents placing him at the very top of the market for both equity and debt transactions. Senior partner Thomas Heather earns his fifth listing in this chapter for his longstanding expertise. The practice boasts such institutional clients as UBS, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley.

Thomas Heather is also seen as an authority in corporate restructurings, handling particularly tricky work. He was counsel to creditors Ashmore Investment and BlueBay Asset Management on the restructuring of housebuilder Urbi.
