Galicia Abogados

Galicia Abogados is one of Mexico’s most respected law firms. Originally focused on banking, securities and M&A matters, the firm has grown to provide specialist services relating to the financial, M&A, energy, infrastructure and regulated industries, among others. Indeed it achieves listings across nine chapters in this guide, demonstrating the breadth of expertise on offer. As a local independent firm, Galicia Abogados works extensively with a network of prominent international law firms across the United States, European, Asia and Latin America, facilitating its global presence and providing access to local business and cultural knowledge. As supported by our research, the firm is particularly applauded for its work in banking, capital markets, project finance, and M&A and governance.

The corporate practice includes a number of first-rate names. Managing partner Manuel Galicia is well noted for his skills in complex transactions and is most regularly seen on cross-border transactions and corporate restructurings. Recently Galicia advised Eli Lilly on its acquisition of Novartis’ veterinary product assets in Brazil, Mexico and Colombia. Christian Lippert is also very highly regarded.

The banking and finance practice gains widespread endorsements, covering both regulatory issues and financing transactions. The team is co-headed by Arturo Perdomo, who represents borrowers and lenders in financings, loans and capital market transactions. Carlos de Maria y Campos is a top dealmaker with further listings across the capital markets, energy and project finance chapters. As part of his practice he counselled SMBC, the Korean Development Bank and Nafin on a financing for a 130MW windfarm project totalling $211 million. José Visoso is mentioned for his expertise advising lenders on secured financing transactions in particular. Managing partner Manuel Galicia is also recognised as a leader in this area.

Four of the firm’s finance team are listed in our capital markets chapter, leading our research in this area. The team acts on headline matters, including counselling Pemex on three consecutive public notes offerings under its 200 billion peso programme, for US$1.62 billion, US$475 million and US$435 million respectively. The practice co-head Maurice Berkman impressed peers with his recent work as lead counsel to Anheuser-Busch Inbev regarding its US$1.36 billion Mexican stock market listing. Alejandro de la Borbolla, Manuel Galicia and Arturo Perdomo are also recognised as leaders in equity and debt issuances.

The firm’s core strength in financing extends to large infrastructure projects. Co-headed by Carlos de Maria y Campos and Francisco Fernández Cueto, the project finance team is consistently involved in many of Mexico’s most significant projects, including the El Encino-La Laguna pipeline project, acting as counsel to Fermaca Pipeline El Encino and its sponsors. Alejandro de la Borbolla certainly counts among the country’s most prominent finance lawyers. His recent work includes handling the bridge financing of the planned Gran Canal toll road connecting Rio de los Remedios with Venta de Carpio. Other key partners include Bernardo Martínez-Negrete and Eugenio Sepúlveda.
