Hengeler Mueller

Hengeler Mueller is one of the most prestigious law firms in the German market. The firm is particularly renowned for the sophistication of its corporate and finance practices, which focus on complex and high-end transactions. As such, its client base includes a majority of the DAX 30, as well as multinationals and major private equity investors. The firm is able to compete with global firms on the international stage through a best-friends network of other leading independent law firms in Europe, including Slaughter and May, Bredin Prat, Uria Menendez and De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek. The firm recently opened an office in Shanghai in response to an increasing amount of Chinese investment in Germany. It ranks as the top firm in our research for M&A, corporate governance, capital markets and banking.

The corporate practice at the firm boasts an elite pool of senior practitioners active on a large proportion of high-end national and cross-border M&A transactions, as well as advising major private and public companies on corporate governance issues. Maximilian Schiessl is the leading M&A lawyer in our research and takes the lead on some of the firm’s most notable mandates, including recently advising KKR on the acquisition of Airbus Defence’s electronics business for US$1.2 billion. The proliferation of towering figures – including Hans-Jörg Ziegenhain and Michael Hoffmann-Becking, as well as other standout nominees, such as Gerd Krieger, Andreas Austmann and Jochen Vetter – conveys the sheer strength and depth of the firm’s offering in this area.

The banking and finance group is outstanding, covering acquisition financing, syndicated, secured and unsecured loans, bond issuances and equity offerings. Johannes Tieves is very highly regarded for his acquisition finance practice and recently acted as counsel to the lenders in Diebold’s takeover of rival ATM manufacturer Wincor Nixdorf. Daniel Weiss has a broad finance practice, which is ranked as top-tier. He regularly advises banks and borrowers on a wide range of financial instruments. One notable transaction is the syndicated financing of leading tech enterprise Carl Zeiss AG. Hendrik Haag is noted for his banking and debt capital markets expertise. He takes a leading role on major debt issuances and acts as counsel to banks on regulatory matters. The partners in the firm’s equity capital markets practice act on some of Germany’s most noteworthy issuances. Wolfgang Groß is seen to be among the top five equity practitioners in the country. The team led by Groß successfully completed Innogy SE’s landmark IPO, the largest listing on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange since 2000. Other active and notable practitioners in the market include Reinhold Ernst and Dirk Busch.

The firm also excels in our investment management, competition, corporate tax, litigation and arbitration chapters. Among those ranked, Thorsten Mäger is recognised as one of the top five competition lawyers in the country with a clearly first rate practice. Thomas Paul is widely seen to be the best investment funds lawyer in the market. Stefanie Beinert is seen as a top counsel for tax advice on corporate transactions. Meanwhile, Peter Heckel and Markus Meier are among the most prominent names in complex domestic and cross-border disputes.
