Gleiss Lutz

Gleiss Lutz is one of Germany’s foremost full-service law firms. It is also one of the largest firms in the country with offices across Germany as well as a presence in Belgium, and has the ability to advise domestic and international clients on the largest and most complex transactions and cases in the country with an extensive international network including other leading firms and lawyers. Gleiss Lutz’s prominent position in the market is conveyed by the 45 listings it receives across 19 different practice areas. In particular, the firm excels across its competition, labour and employment, and corporate practice groups, which all achieve numerous listing in the edition.

The competition department is a particularly notable part of the firm, achieving six listings this year. Under Ingo Brinker who is head of the firm’s competition practice, the department handles matters relating to merger control, cartel investigations, damages actions and compliance. He is joined by Ulrich Denzel and Wolfgang Bosch who both stand out for the high quality of their work in this area. The team has undertaken several significant matters recently, including advising a consortium of seven banks led by Norddeutsche Landesbank in the restructuring of the financing for the construction of Berlin Brandenbrug Airport by the company Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH. In addition the team has impressively secured a significant legal victory for Markant AG, obtaining an injunction in appeal proceedings against the ministerial approval given for the potential merger between the supermarkets Edeka and Kaiser’s Tengelmann.

Gleiss Lutz is also home to a “first-rate” labour and employment team which likewise achieves six listings. Thomas Winzer heads the practice which counts major national and international companies among its clients, advising and representing them in all areas of individuals and collective employment law. This year the firm advised the US investment bank Goldman Sachs in relation to its proposed acquisition of the bakery group Continental Bakeries from NPM Capital. Christian Arnold is a standout name in our research for personal and collective employment issues, including board member employment contracts, co-determination issues and collective bargaining. He is joined by Martin Diller who is widely regarded as a top labour and employment lawyer and also stands out for company pension scheme matters.

Corporate law is a traditional area of focus and it commensurately has a “top-notch” M&A practice with four lawyers recognised in our research, providing market leading expertise on matters relating to public takeovers, joint ventures, acquisitions, and sales of privately owned companies. The team’s recent work includes directing SLM Solutions Group AG, a principal provider of metal-based additive manufacturing technology (3D printing), on the conclusion of a business combination agreement with GE Aviation, a division of the US-based General Electric Group. Furthermore the team counselled STIHL on becoming a shareholder of the Chinese manufacturer Globe Tools Group. Jan Bauer specialises in cross-border private M&A. He is joined by other prominent practitioners such as Michael Arnold, who stands out for his advice in M&A, public takeover and corporate governance

A further three names are similarly recognised for their M&A and governance work, including Gerhard Wirth, who is one of the standout names in the German market with a recognised practice advising major listed companies. Christian Cascante is also highlighted, as is Gerhard Wegen, whose particularly broad practice achieves a third listing in our arbitration chapter.

With multiple listings across a range of practice areas including corporate tax, arbitration, and banking among many others, Gleiss Lutz’s impressive breadth of expertise is self-evident, ensuring the firm maintains its future as a leading player in the German market.
