Global legal giant Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer once again emerges as our leading firm in Germany in terms of number of listings, with an exceptional 71 lawyers included in this year’s edition – 20 more than at any other firm.

 The breadth of the firm is also evident, with individuals listed in 24 different practice areas, joint-most of any firm.

Corporate and banking law remain the major strengths of the firm; it has the most individuals listed in WWL: Germany 2017 in competition and the joint-most in banking. It also has a strong showing this year in M&A, capital markets, corporate tax and transport.

With six offices and nearly 400 lawyers across Germany, Freshfields is able to provide an exceptional service to clients in the country.

Competition is a major strength of the firm, both in Germany and worldwide. Martin Klusmann concentrates his practice on compliance and investigation work and is regarded as among the leading lawyers in the area in Germany. Helmut Bergmann brings exceptional international expertise to his practice, with insight into both US and EU competition matters, and represents a number of significant global clients. Uta Itzen handles a range of work including merger clearance and cartel matters. She is also an experienced litigator in the area. Also highly rated is Frank Röhling, who offers clients wide-ranging sector expertise covering pharmaceuticals, medical devices and food and beverages.

Freshfields’ banking group also stands apart from the rest of the market. Yorck Jetter is an experienced practitioner in debt and acquisition financing, with notable expertise in cross-border mandates. Mario Hüther’s practice features an emphasis on acquisition financing and syndicated lending. He has in-house experience, having previously worked for Royal Bank of Scotland. Frank Laudenklos is another debt financing expert at the firm, with over 15 years’ experience in banking and regulatory law.

Another of the firm’s major areas of proficiency is capital markets and we list four of its attorneys in this area. Among this number is Rick van Aerssen who is head of the firm’s global corporate practice group. He regularly represents financial institutions and corporations on capital markets issues. Also included is the highly rated Andreas König, who assists underwriters, issuers and shareholder counsel with a range of transactions.

The firm excels in corporate tax matters as well. Global joint managing partner Stephan Eilers is the most nominated Freshfields tax partner in our research and advises major clients on IPOs, M&A deals and other transactions with regard to tax issues. He has particular expertise in US, Chinese and UK matters. Martin Schießl assists clients with an array of tax issues relating to corporate transactions, including structuring and implementation. Head of the German and Austrian tax team, Norbert Schneider primarily advises on tax restructuring in relation to M&A deals, including private equity transactions.

Transport is another area of strength across Freshfields’ German offices. The Frankfurt-based Dirk Schmalenbach has substantial expertise in asset financing matters, particularly aviation financing, while Konrad Schott, in addition to aviation financing, is also an expert in rail financing matters.

The firm also has notable capability in M&A, in keeping with its global reputation in the area. Among its leading practitioners listed is Stephan Waldhausen, who handles a range of prominent M&A deals across sectors including transport, real estate and financial services. Christoph Seibt in the firm’s Hamburg office is experienced across a wide range of corporate matters, primarily representing publicly listed companies on significant transactions.
