CMS Hasche Sigle

Founded in 1953 as Hasche Albrecht Fischer and following a number of mergers and, finally, absorption by CMS, Berlin-based CMS Hasche Sigle has now grown into one of the country’s largest law firms and continues to stand out as a premier offering with deep local roots and cross-border links. The firm relies heavily on CMS’s strong international network that rests upon links to over 3,200 lawyers in 61 offices across 35 jurisdictions worldwide. The firm is therefore ideally placed to offer German and international clients a comprehensive cross-border service. The firm achieves listings in 17 chapters across this guide, which highlights the breadth of expertise on offer. As attested by our research, the firm is particularly recommended in the areas of arbitration, TMT, competition, government contracts, real estate and labour and employment.

CMS Hasche Sigle boasts a market-leading arbitration practice staffed by fantastic arbitration practitioners with a wealth of expertise representing clients in both domestic and international arbitral proceedings, as well as sitting as arbitrators themselves. Global head of the firm’s dispute resolution practice Torsten Lörcher is known for taking the lead on some of its high-profile engineering mandates and has sat as an arbitrator in over 40 cases. Klaus Michael Sachs is an internationally renowned practitioner who enjoys an eminent position in the German market. He is well known for his considerable experience having represented parties or sat as arbitrator in over 200 cases. The “fantastic” Nicolas Wiegand maintains a broad practice focusing on a wide range of commercial disputes, as well as investment treaty arbitrations. Wiegand also the lead on many arbitration proceedings related to the Asian region, and China in particular. Dorothee Ruckteschler regularly represents clients in post M&A and shareholder disputes, as well as D&O liability cases.

CMS Hasche Sigle’s technology, media and communications practice comes highly regarded and garners four nominations in this year’s TMT research. Axel Funk heads the firm’s technology team and was one of the lead partners involved in advising Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe on the introduction of its “paydirekt” online payment system. Malte Grützmacher is an accomplished practitioner and was part of the team that advised n3k Holding on the sale of n3k Informatik to VR Equitypartner. Christian Runte is a recognised expert in EU and German data protection and privacy issues. Jens Neitzel draws on his competition law and regulatory expertise to advise telecommunications clients on transactional issues and the negotiation and drafting of contracts.

The firm’s real estate practice is a force in the German market and a number of lateral hires has seen this practice grow in recent years. Hans Joachim Kummer is a “big player” in the market boasting considerable experience advising on a series of substantial portfolio transactions. He is also well versed in assisting institutional real estate investors with complex issues involving investments. Volker Zerr is a well-established practitioner known for advising national and international clients on high profile real estate transactions. Zerr recently led the team that advised Allianz Real Estate Germany on the €400 million sale of a property portfolio to a fund managed by ATRIZIA Immobilien. Heinrich Schirmer is a real estate transactions specialist and has advised clients on many domestic and international transactions involving both commercial and residential properties.

CMS Hasche Sigle stands out in our research this year for its impressive labour, employment and pensions practice that represents domestic and international companies ranging from small and medium-sized companies to DAX-listed corporates. Björn Gaul is a “heavy hitter” with experience in company outsourcings, compliance policies and collective bargaining agreements. Gerlind Wisskirchen specialises in cross-border work and counts a number of international corporates among her clients. Christopher Jordan is a labour and employment law specialist who focuses on advising clients on the labour and employment issues related to restructurings, outsourcings and operational matters.

As reflected in this year’s government contracts chapter, CMS Hasche Sigle’s public commercial law and procurement practice is home to a number of strong practitioners, including Volkmar Wagner. Wagner is singled out for his procurement expertise and he has significant experience advising both contractual authorities and bidders on the procurement process. Christian Scherer-Leydecker is extremely knowledgeable in public commercial law and boasts over 20 years of experience advising both investors and public authorities undertaking major infrastructure and industrial PPP projects.

In the competition market, CMS retains a strong market share thanks to its impressive team. Global head of the firm’s competition and EU group Harald Kahlenberg regularly advises clients on EU and German merger control and transaction-related competition issues. He also has considerable experience representing clients before the European Commission and the German Federal Cartel Office. Tim Reher is an active and trusted presence in the market and often plays a prominent role in the firm’s corporate mandates as well as civil cartel and licensing matters.
