Fasken Martineau DuMoulin is a leading international business law and litigation firm. It was founded 16 years ago through a merger of three regional Canadian law firms to become “one of Canada’s top players” in the market. In particular the firm excels across its mining, banking, TMT and private client practices which all garner multiple listings in the edition. With a global presence, Fasken Martineau has offices across Canada as well as London and Johannesburg. It boasts an impressive 74 listings across 26 different practice areas, and is home to some of the most notable practitioners in Canada.


The mining department is an especially impressive constituent of the firm. With almost 140 lawyers making up the global team, it is one of the largest practice groups at the firm. Garnering 11 listings, it tops our research for the chapter. Under John Turner who achieves a second listing in our capital markets chapter, the team recently counselled Greenstones Resources regarding its conversion of a US$8.125 million convertible debenture and subscription for approximately C$5.4 million of additional shares in Coro Mining Corp. He is supported by further “outstanding” practitioners including Michael Bourassa and Jean Gagné who receive recognition for their “high-quality work” and “broad knowledge base”. The team counts Greenstones Resources as a regular main client, alongside the global multi-metals business Nyrstar NV, Adventure Gold and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, illustrating the team’s reputation for excellence.

The firm is also home to a “first-class” banking team which achieves eight listings in this chapter. The firm advises on many of leading financial institutions in the country; last year it advised the the Bank of Nova Scotia and a syndicate of lenders concerning US$425 million credit facilities entered into by TELUS International. John Torrey is a leading name in our research, acting for borrowers and lenders on complex secured lending transactions He achieves a further listing in the mining chapter for advising on the financings of mines. Stephen Clark co-chairs the financial institutions group and is widely viewed as a top banking regulatory lawyer who is very conversant with the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions and the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada.

In addition, Fasken Martineau DuMoulin offers clients a “top-notch” TMT practice, with five of its lawyers listed in this chapter, providing market-leading expertise on complex outsourcings, e-commerce, procurement, privacy and data protection, and licensing matters. The team’s recent work includes advising Groove in relation to its acquisition by Microsoft, as well as advising Eventbase Technology concerning the raising of $6 million in Series B funding from the Madrona Venture Group. John Beardwood has an international reputation for his work in this field, and leads the department. He is joined by other prominent practitioners such as Laurence Dunbar, who chairs the communications law practice and advises clients on a wide range regulation, licensing issues and government policies related to the telecoms sector.

The private client team equally stands out in our research with four listings. The firm excels in estate planning matters, advising high net worth individuals and family businesses on related issues. Top- notch personal tax and estate planning practitioners Elena Hoffstein and Edgar Frechette are among the key players at the firm. The team noteworthy matters recently include acting for the Vincent Family obtaining $443,500 from the True Patriot Love Foundation on behalf of the Stand on Guard Fund and other donors, as well as representing long-lost heirs to acquire their full rights against the Agence du Revenu du Quebec.
