Pinheiro Neto Advogados

Founded in 1942, Brazilian independent full-service firm Pinheiro Neto Advogados is a major force in the Brazilian market with a prestigious reputation both domestically and internationally. As one of the first Brazilian firms to service foreign clients and focus solely on corporate law, the firm now has clients in over 60 countries worldwide and rightly has an entrenched position as one of the go-to firms for international clients engaging in business in Brazil. The breadth of the firm’s expertise and quality is evident in the fact that it achieves listings in 24 chapters in this edition, highlighting that Pinheiro really does offer its clients a full and comprehensive service. In particular, the firm’s banking, tax, corporate, life sciences and competition practices are particularly worthy of note.

The firm boasts an excellent crop of lawyers with extensive experience advising domestic and foreign clients in both an advisory and controversy capacity on transactional-related tax issues, international tax planning and tax disputes in Brazil. Pinheiro Neto’s success is underpinned by its strong relationships with many of the country’s leading banks, with the firm acting as external corporate counsel for Citibank, Itaú, Bradesco and Santander.

The firm’s corporate transactions practice is particularly strong. Fernando Alves Meira is recognised as a top name in the Brazilian corporate sphere working with an enviable list of clients, including the likes of Deutsche Bank, Santander and Sodexo among others. Henry Sztutman stands out for his wealth of experience advising clients in M&A, private equity and capital markets. Miguel Tornovsky completes the firm’s complement of nominees and is singled out for his professionalism and knowledge when guiding high-profile clients, including Swiss-based multinational pharmaceutical giant Novartis in their efforts to dispose of Brazilian assets in 2015.

Angela Fan Chi Kung shines in our research this year for her regulatory expertise. She leads the firm’s life sciences department and has advised clients on some of the firm’s larger mandates in the food, pharmaceutical, medical devices and cosmetics industries. Head of the firm’s product liability department Sérgio Pinheiro Marçal is a recognised expert in Brazilian consumer law, and Camila Martino Parise is “an undoubtable talent” with an impressive command of regulatory laws governing the life sciences industries. The firm’s competition practice is home to three outstanding lawyers, including former president of the Brazilian Institute for Competition and Consumer Relations Cristianne Saccab Zarzur. According to sources, she is a “fine lawyer” with experience representing high-profile clients in antitrust litigation before the Brazilian Competition authority. Additionally, Adolpho Julio de Carvalho really stands out in our aviation research and is recognised as a prominent figure in the market and leads on the firm’s larger mandates, including acting for LATAM as issuer of enhanced equipment trust certificates worth US$1 billion.
