Machado Meyer Sendacz e Opice Advogados comes fourth in our research, boasting an impressive 29 listings across 13 different practice areas in the edition. Founded 44 years ago, the firm advises domestic and international clients, government bodies and financial institutions across a range of sectors. The firm is best known for its corporate and finance practices, and particularly excels in our research across its M&A, project finance, capital markets and corporate tax departments, which all garner multiple listings in the edition. With a global reach, Machado Meyer has strong connections with the major legal firms in the United States, Europe, Latin America and Asia.  


The M&A department is a strong suit of the firm, with five listings in this chapter. It is a particularly key department, with approximately half of the partnership being involved in the M&A practice, which is known to be one of the busiest in the country.The strong corporate team has acted on numerous notable mandates. It counselled BRF in a complex deal worth 1.8 billion reais, in which it separated its dairy assets into a new subsidiary to be sold to France’s Lactalis.

The corporate practice is supported by three further “excellent” practitioners. Gustavo Rugani do Couto e Silva is a leading name in our research, standing out for his excellent negotiation skills. José Roberto Opice and Nei Schilling Zelmanovits are also highlighted for their extensive knowledge base, which sees them receive further listings in our banking, capital market and private funds chapters respectively. The team counts Telefónica as a regular key client; the Portuguese cement company Secil, the UK’s Compass Minerals and Phoenix Tower International are also among its high-profile clientele, illustrating the firm’s “long track record of excellence in M&A deals”.

The firm’s impressive capital markets department is further represented by the “highly sought-after” Eliana Helena de Gregorio Ambrosio Chimenti. Her recent work includes acting as counsel for an issuance by energy producer Belo Monte, valued at US$141 million, as well as assisting Telefónica’s US$5.5 billion shares issuance to fund its acquisition of GVT. The capital markets team has a reputation for boasting “some of the best legal minds in Brazil”.

The “dedicated and responsive” project finance team achieves four listings in this chapter. The team has impressed working on one of Brazil’s largest project finance deals this year, representing US fund EIG in a syndicated credit facility worth 2.8 billion reais to refinance a BNDES bridge loan. José Virgilio Lopes Enei has a notable reputation for his work, counting Brazilian conglomerate Odebrecht as a major client. Alongside him, “consummate professional” Julia Rodrigues Coimbra also earns a listing in this chapter. Clients recommend the practitioners in this department for their “energy and dedication when working on complex matters.”

In addition, Machado Meyer Sendacz e Opice Advogados features a “world-class” corporate tax practice department. Celso de Paula da Costa is considered to be “one of the great and the good” and often provides tax advice on large transactions. Two further nominees, Raquel Novais and Fernando Tonanni, are highlighted in our research for their technical capabilities and “excellent customer service”. Tonanni’s broad practice is illustrated by his second listing in our private client chapter. Recently the tax department also aided the corporate team in BRF’s sale of its dairy units to Lactalis.
