Icaza Gonzalez-Ruiz & Aleman

Founded in 1920, Icaza Gonzalez-Ruiz & Aleman is one of the most respected and well-established full service law firms in Panama.  Over half the firm’s listings are in finance, a practice in which it has historically been reputable, however it is also well-regarded for its corporate, IP and private client practices.

Icaza works closely with several key Panamanian agencies and businesses, having recently aided the Panama Canal Authority in overseeing the expansion of the Panama Canal and the issuance of bonds worth $450 million. The firm also boasts an impressive portfolio of multinational clients including Dell, DreamWorks, Kimberly-Clark International, Citibank, HSBC, Unilever and Delta Airlines.

The firm has five listings in finance, a practice that boasts several experienced and talented lawyers. Luis Chalhoub is regularly described as “a stand out banking lawyer”, who advises local and multinational banks on transactional and regulatory issues. Michelle O de de la Guardia is a prominent and experienced banking lawyer, noted for her expertise in the structuring and issuance of securities. She is also well-respected for her work in private client matters, where she is “top notch”. Roberto Alemán advises on contracts, investments and M&A and is a “great individual to have working on complex transactions”. Gabriel González-Ruiz is described as an “exceptional handler” of contractual, licencing and transactional matters in the sector. He is also greatly respected for his corporate practice.

Intellectual property is also a strong area for Icaza. Its lawyers work with domestic and international clients, covering trademarks, patents, utility models, industrial designs and copyright law. Head of the department, Gabriela Tejada de Britton is regarded as “a star of the IP bar” and is recognised for her “encyclopaedic knowledge” of the area. Hugo Morán focuses on brand protection strategy and IP litigation; clients regard him as “a go to lawyer” for infringement issues.

Also standing out for recognition is Javier José Vallarino who noted for his work in labour law, where he has advised multinational corporations and financial organisations. He is considered to be “a fine lawyer” whose advice is “always well-thought through”.

Operating on a high level both nationally and internationally, Icaza has established itself as a firm whose lawyers are very effective in matters that demand both business acumen and acute legal knowledge.
