Jones Day

Originating from Cleveland, Ohio, in 1893 as Blandin & Rice, the Jones Day we know today took shape from 1939 and has since evolved to become one of the world’s largest law firms with over 2,400 lawyers based in 40 offices around the world. The firm enjoys a “fantastic” reputation for its integrated, client-centric approach that ensures that the full weight of the firm is always behind clients. The firm’s Paris office opened in 1970 and now boasts over 120 lawyers, including 32 partners, who are renowned for their work with banks and financial institutions, private equity, real estate and venture capital funds. In this edition, we feature 17 lawyers from across 12 practice areas.

Jones Day excels in the field of corporate tax law. In this year’s edition, the firm garners two listings. Paris-based Siamak Mostafavi is a “leader authority” whose practice focuses on the taxation of financial products and derivative instruments. Mostafavi regularly represents large financial institutions in complex, cross-border transactions and is praised by clients for his “exceptional resolve” especially in difficult cases. The “adept” Emmanuel de La Rochethulon is praised by his peers for his “specialist knowledge” in both domestic and cross-border transactions. A “veritable expert” in French tax structuring, he is known for his diligent manner and “fine attention to detail”.

In the environment and energy sector, the firm boasts two “excellent” practitioners. Sources are effusive in their praise of Françoise S Labrousse. According to sources, she is “a joy to work with” and has an exceptionally personable manner with clients. Labrousse has extensive experience in the proceedings surrounding the contamination of soil and groundwater, air contamination, waste management, chemical substances, dangerous products, industrial risks, climate change and energy-related projects. Pierre Bechmann is commended by his peers for his adaptability in the field. He has represented clients in the chemical and nuclear sectors in several, high profile product investigations and litigated in respect to major industrial accidents.

Two standout practitioners are also highlighted in our competition chapter and it is seen to be one of the most prominent US firms in French and EU competition law. The “fantastic” Eric Barbier de la Serre has extensive industry experience across a broad range of sectors. According to sources, he is “involved in a number of French and EU competition investigations”. With over 30 years of experience in the field, Eric Morgan de Rivery has a “wealth of expertise” in relation to the practices and applications of the European Commission. In particular, his practice focuses on merger control, cartel and state aid cases, abuses of dominant positions as well as deregulation”.

Michael Bühler is a “well-reputed name” in the international dispute resolution scene. Active in well over 100 arbitrations, he has a broad range of expertise in complex international arbitral proceedings including the civil construction and engineering, oil and gas, industrial, hotel development and pharmaceutical sectors. Sources praise his “comprehensive theoretical expertise”, which serves as the foundation of his success.

Jones Day affords its clients with strong practitioners across the key areas of business law and is able to draw upon an enviable global network of legal expertise.
