Bredin Prat

Bredin Prat is the largest independent law firm in Paris, with the strength and depth to rival the biggest global firms established in the French capital. The firm also competes on the continental stage with a formulised partnership with some the Europe’s best known law firms, including Slaughter and May, Uría Menéndez, and Hengeler Mueller. Founded in 1966, the firm has built on its arbitration and litigation expertise, particularly within its corporate practice. It prides itself on its ability to deliver exceptional services to clients, as well as for its international focus – with two-thirds of the firm’s activities being cross-border. It performs strongly this year, achieving 28 listings across 10 practice areas.

Corporate tax is one of the core strengths of the firm, with six leading lawyers recognised for their work in the field. The practice has experience dealing with M&A, private equity, restructuring and executive remuneration packages. Yves Rutschmann is a “stand-out” practitioner, and co-leads the firm’s tax team. The “terrific” Julien Gayral is praised for his work with private clients on their personal tax matters. Pierre-Henri Durand “continues to impress” this year with his work on French and international tax law.

The firm’s corporate practice is also outstanding. Half of its partners specialise in the field, five of whom are listed as leading figures in the market. Sebastien Prat runs a “fantastic corporate practice” that focuses on M&A and contentious governance matters. Alongside him, senior partner Didier Martin is considered a “true authority”. The “esteemed” Patrick Dziewolski is recognised for his “superb work on cross-border M&A transactions” in the energy, construction and financial sectors.

Restructuring and insolvency is another practice area in which the firm excels, as four lawyers achieve inclusion this year. The practice advises on a broad range of matters including financial restructuring, insolvency proceedings and disposals of businesses. The “terrific” Nicolas Laurent co-leads the practice, and is commended for the “invaluable advice” that he delivers to clients in financial difficulty. Raphaële Courtier wins praise for her “intricate knowledge” of financial restructurings and is also recognised this year for her banking finance practice. She is joined by the “brilliant” Olivier Puech, whose particular expertise lies in judicial aspects of insolvency proceedings and related litigation. Olivier Assant is a “consummate expert” in the field of corporate restructurings.

Four advocates receive listings for their “impressive” competition practice. The firm advises clients on all aspects of French and European competition law, particularly relating to the telecommunications, energy and transport sectors. The “veteran” Robert Saint-Esteben leads the firm’s competition team and is described by peers as “in a class of his own”. The “exceptional” Hugues Calvet specialises in antitrust litigation, while Olivier Billard has recently been very active in cartel investigations and major state aid cases before the European Commission.

The highly regarded Eric Dezeuze is recognised in this edition for his “excellent” business crime defence and investigations practice.

Bredin Prat is home to some of the country’s most distinguished and respected practitioners, impressing clients and fellow peers alike.
