As the country’s largest independent law firm, Lenz & Staehelin hold a prominent position within the Swiss legal market. Its offices in Geneva, Zurich and Lausanne provide clients with comprehensive legal services on a range of legal matters, with particular strengths in corporate and finance law. The firm prides itself on its specialist knowledge and ability to deliver comprehensive and practical solutions to clients. This year, 39 individuals garner 73 listings across 25 practice areas. 


The firm’s M&A practice boasts a “fantastic” reputation and achieves an impressive eight listings. Its practitioners advise on many of the country’s major, as well as smaller, deals, and possess great expertise in structuring complex cross-border and domestic transactions. Rudolf Tschäni is a “star” in the field, and is also recognised for his work in corporate governance. He is joined by Jacques Iffland who specialises in corporate law, securities regulation and M&A. He is also noted for his capital markets practice. Hans-Jakob Diem is praised for his “brilliant” M&A and banking practice, and is regularly involved in complex domestic and cross-border transactions.

Banking is one of Lenz & Staehelin’s core practice areas, with its advocates advising clients on matters including asset management, structured finance and private banking. The “esteemed” François Rayroux is one of seven advocates listed this year, and is recognised for his work in banking, capital markets and investment management. Alongside him, Stefan Breitenstein is renowned for his “tremendous understanding” of the sector. Patrick Hünerwadel also garners recognition this year for his work in banking, as well as capital markets and transport.

Five leading practitioners are commended for their work in capital markets this year. The firm strives to ensure that it is at the forefront of the ever-changing standards and regulations of the global capital markets. The “highly regarded” Patrick Schleiffer is head of the firm’s capital markets group in Zurich. His practice encompasses stock exchange and securities law, financial services regulation and investment fund law.

Commercial litigation is also a field in which the firm excels, with five lawyers achieving nominations. Martin Burkhardt is also commended for his restructuring and insolvency work, and continues to provide clients with “astute” counsel. Alex Wittmann advises clients on contractual and commercial disputes, and is regarded by peers as a “formidable litigator”.

Several lawyers at the firm are listed in multiple chapters, including the “sensational” Shelby du Pasquier. He is co-head of the firm’s banking and finance group in Geneva, and is commended for his work in banking, corporate governance, insurance and reinsurance, investigations and investment management.

Daniel Tunik garners inclusion for his work in asset recovery, business crime defence, commercial litigation, investigations, and labour and employment, thus demonstrating the “depth and breadth of his expertise”.

The “exceptional” Thierry Calame is described by peers as a “prominent Swiss advocate”, and is listed in the fields of arbitration, life sciences, patents and trademarks.

Matthias Wolf also garners four nominations this year for his “excellent” work in banking, capital markets, corporate governance and M&A.

Further listings in various other practice areas, including corporate governance, investigations and arbitration, demonstrate the firm’s broad and extensive expertise.
