Monckton Chambers

Monckton Chambers traces its roots back to the 1930s, but it was a decision made by its members in the 1970s, to focus on the law of the European Economic Community, that has led to its modern-day success as one of the stand out chambers for EU and competition law.

Monckton Chambers is a “heavyweight” competition set comprising “highly skilled” barristers who have worked on some of the leading cases in the field. We list seven leading counsel and six juniors from the set. Daniel Beard QC is a “true specialist” in the field who is “highly sought-after” by clients for complex competition law matters. He has “deep industry know-how” of the media and entertainment and telecoms sectors and is also recommended in those areas. Jon Turner QC is a “standout” silk who garners four listings: competition, environment, media and entertainment, and telecoms. He is “incredibly gifted” and has an “astute legal mind”. Peers “cannot praise him highly enough” and find him a “delight to work with”. Tim Ward QC is a “stellar advocate” who displays “exemplary skills”. His practice focuses on competition and telecoms matters and he regularly acts in disputes concerning damages, mergers and market reviews, and cartel penalties. Meredith Pickford QC took silk in 2015 and is a “tremendously bright lawyer” who “presents creative yet practical solutions”. His court work is “simply top-notch”. He is also noted for his regulatory work in the media and entertainment and telecoms sectors. Josh Holmes receives “huge plaudits” from peers and clients alike and is considered “one of the stars of his generation”. His competition work is “first-rate” and he also has a “strong understanding of the telecoms market”. Robert Palmer focuses his practice on competition law matters across a wide range of industries including aviation, energy, financial services, pharmaceutical and telecommunications. He is “devastatingly effective” and a “top choice” for many.

The chambers has a deep bench of procurement law specialists which is borne out in our research where eight individuals are highly recommended. Michael Bowsher QC has played a “pivotal role” in many of the major UK procurement cases in the last decade, and is considered “a true authority” in the field. Valentina Sloane stands out for her “experience beyond her years of call” in procurement law. She is “incredibly user-friendly yet a robust advocate”. Rob Williams has advised public authorities, utilities and contractors on contentious and non-contentious matters in the procurement field.

Monckton Chambers’ barristers possess market-leading expertise with commercial sensitivity that ensures clients receive a “first rate service” tailored to their needs.
