Keating Chambers

Keating Chambers combines a strong tradition of excellence with “innovative commercially focused thinking”, to make it a leading set amongst the UK bar, with a particularly outstanding showing in our construction research. 

Construction is a major focus with 31 barristers listed in our research, many of whom enjoy a further listing in a second chapter reflecting the “far-reaching expertise” of the chambers as a whole. Marcus Taverner QC leads the way in our research, as the most highly regarded barrister in the field. In particular he is lauded for his “sound judgement” combined with “enthusiasm and a strong focus”. His “broad skill set” is illustrated by his ranking also in our energy and natural resources chapter, where his work is described as “second to none”. Four further barristers are listed in both our construction, and energy and natural resources chapters. Adam Constable QC is an “outstanding barrister”, who features as second in our research for the construction chapter. His “enviable practice” includes specialising in onshore and offshore construction, engineering, energy, shipbuilding and technology disputes, as well as professional negligence and insurance claims related to these sectors. For his work in energy and natural resources he has been praised for his “thorough understanding of the industry” and ensuing “ability to closely tailor advice to clients’ business needs.” Likewise Paul Buckingham enjoys a double listing in these two chapters, with a reputation as “someone to be reckoned with in the courtroom”. He has been described by clients and peers as a “highly effective advocate” and a “very safe pair of hands”. He focuses his practice on major construction, engineering and energy disputes, with a particular emphasis on international arbitration work.

The construction team is additionally represented by the “wonderful” Samuel Townend, described as “an incredible legal strategist” with a “fantastic work ethic”.  He regularly acts for clients in the Courts of England, Wales and Northern Ireland along with all forms of alternative dispute resolution, both domestic and international. Simon Hughes QC has an “exemplary reputation in the market for excellence and achievement”. His practice comprises disputes relating to international power-plants, major infrastructure projects and shipbuilding work, with particular expertise of construction law in the Far East. His “high-profile clients” include those involved in disputes in Hong Kong, Singapore, Korea, Australia, Dubai and other parts of the UAE, various islands within the Caribbean and New Zealand. Tom Owen is “sensational” and “really knows his stuff”. Described as a “persuasive and confident advocate”, he is also praised by clients and peers for his “impressive courtroom manner”. The “superb” Lucy Garrett is known for being “highly technical” and “providing unique insight” into complicated issues. Her practice includes claims for and against construction professionals as well as construction-related issues such as insurance, bonds and guarantees.

Keating Chambers also boast a “world-class” arbitration practice. Richard Harding QC and John Marrin QC both enjoy a double listing in this area of research as well as in construction. Harding is “particularly gifted” and is praised for his “versatile thinking.” He acts as counsel for governments, professionals, contractors and private employers, and is regularly appointed as an arbitrator in international commercial matters. He has particular expertise relating to the Middle East and Gulf regions. Marrin, meanwhile, is an “extraordinarily talented” practitioner known for his “impressively strong analytical skills”. His practice comprises “all aspects of the construction, engineering, energy and technology sectors”, where he has acted as arbitrator in both domestic and international disputes. They are joined by three other notable practitioners in our arbitration chapter. John Uff CBE QC stands out for his “leading contribution to the field.” He is praised for being “incredibly knowledgeable and articulate,” and has been recommended by clients and peers for his “extensive knowledge base” and “ability to handle complex issues”.

Government contracts is another area of notable strength for the chambers, with four barristers highlighted by our research. Sarah Hannaford QC is listed here, as well as in our construction chapter, reflecting her “considerable expertise” and “wide-ranging talent”. She has been described as the “natural choice for complex high-value procurement issues” due to her “close attention to detail” combined with a “hands-on and friendly approach”. Fionnuala McCredie QC is a “splendid practitioner” and “head and shoulders above the competition”. Her “impressive practice” comprises a wide range of advocacy, advisory and drafting for both domestic and international clients, who comment on her “willingness to always go the extra mile” for them. David Gollancz is “a top player in the field”. With “an incredibly sharp mind”, he is known for his “boundless knowledge of the sector” and for providing “thoughtful and insightful advice”. Simon Taylor has a “strong track record of excellence”, acting both for bidders and authorities in disputes, and “expertly advises” companies and public bodies on competition, state aid and regulatory issues. In particular he has specific expertise in regulated sectors for example healthcare, water, rail and communications.
