Since its establishment in 1961, Essex Court Chambers has built a “leading reputation” for commercial, international and European law, and boasts some of the “leading names at the bar today”. This year it receives 55 inclusions across eight practice areas.

Two other names also find recognition for both their arbitration and insurance practices. V V Veeder QC is a “stellar talent” who “inspires confidence in clients” while Ian Hunter QC has an “encyclopaedic knowledge” and “forensic approach” which ensures he continues to be recognised as a “top name”.

There are nine more barristers from the set listed for their insurance and reinsurance expertise. John Lockey QC acts on insurance and reinsurance disputes before the English courts at all levels and in arbitrations in London, in Europe, and worldwide. He is a “technical genius” whose “international outlook” helps to “set him apart from the crowd”. David Scorey QC is praised for his “resolute focus” and “ability to get the judge to see things his way” and has extensive experience of commercial litigation in both domestic courts and international arbitrations. David Joseph QC is featured for both his insurance and reinsurance and aviation work, and clients laud his “diligent manner” and “impressive record”. Gordon Pollock QC is featured for his insurance, civil fraud and energy and natural resources. His ability to “tailor advice to client needs” “sets him apart from peers”. Also recognised as an insurance and civil fraud specialist, Paul Stanley QC is the “first port of call” for many.

A total of eight practitioners are highlighted from the firm in our civil fraud chapter. Richard Millett QC specialises in advocacy in court and in arbitration and other tribunals, and is a “go-to lawyer for many”. He also features in our banking listing. Paul McGrath QC boasts a “sterling reputation” and is a “major player” at the civil fraud bar according to peers, while Paul Stanley QC impresses with his “creative solutions” and “quick thinking”.
