Blackstone Chambers

Blackstone is notable for both its large membership and its leading position across a number of distinct areas in our research. The set has a longstanding tradition of excellence in commercial and public law, as well as flourishing practices in competition law and employment law. With this expertise on offer, Blackstone is most conspicuously a leading set in the sports, media and entertainment, and telecommunication sectors. Many of the most distinguished and accomplished silks at the bar are door tenants, along with some of the most promising juniors, who regularly rank among the most highly regarded in their areas of practice.

Media and entertainment is a core area of practice for several members, who regularly counsel leading industry clients on commercial, regulatory and administrative matters. Ian Mill QC is “the silk of choice” for many of the most prominent recording artists, major record labels and music publishers. David Pannick QC is “a grandee of the bar” with a diverse practice that lends itself to some of the most important public law matters in the media and entertainment industry. The “phenomenal” Robert Howe QC is “one of the best – if not the best” at the bar for copyright and IP disputes in the music industry.

The set also top ranks in the sports segment of our research, with its reputation unrivalled among law firms and sports entities. Adam Lewis QC is near-universally considered “the very best sports silk at the bar”, with “a phenomenal practice” boasting some of the biggest sports teams and athletes in football, rugby, cricket, tennis, F1, athletics, boxing and cycling. Ian Mill QC is also considered one of the leading silks in sports law. He is highly sought-after for his eminence in disciplinary hearings and contractual disputes across a range of major sports. The firm also boasts the best sports junior in our research, Nick De Marco, who regularly acts for the highest-profile governing bodies, clubs and athletes in a range of commercial claims, disciplinary and anti-doping proceedings.

A number of barristers at the set focus their knowledge and experience of regulatory, competition and public law matters on the telecoms market. The “immensely impressive” Dinah Rose QC tops our ranking for the sector, regularly acting for Ofcom and for the main telecoms companies. She is regarded as “equally outstanding in her advice and in her representations”. Pushpinder Saini QC has a widespread practice and most often acts for the regulators in disputes; he is regarded as “a well-known authority” on regulatory and competition law matters in the sector.

Civil fraud is another key area of strength, with tenants well-versed in financial services litigation and regulations. The set is often the destination of choice for complex international fraud, anti-counterfeiting, breach of fiduciary duty and asset recovery cases. Barbara Dohmann QC is “a tough as nails” advocate, with “brilliant cross-examination skills”. According to respondents, “Her superb reputation is well earned”. Andrew Hunter QC stands out for his high-profile work and “effective delivery skills”. He is said to “earn the ears of the court” and is highly praised by opponents and instructing solicitors alike.

In sum, Blackstone Chambers is home to some of the best commercial and public law barristers at the bar, who are regularly recommended by both domestic and international clients for the strength of their practices.
